Swirling pondweed in a giant lake
Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela is better known as lightning lake (see http://bit.ly/2l8B3RA and http://bit.ly/2mlIMNQ) for the near permanent electrical storms that grace it, but NASA's AQUA satellite snapped an unusual pattern of moving weed earlier this month. This body of water is stratified, with layers of water of distinct composition and properties stacked above one another. Many lakes and the Black Sea share this property, often with oxygenated waters above and anoxic ones below.
For Maracaibo this means cool salty nutrient rich below and warmer fresher water above, but a large dump of rain can cause the layers to mix, bringing nutrients up into the sunlit zone where weeds can flourish if they have the means. The lake is connected to the Caribbean via a 40km strait, and the influx of salty water causes a current that produces the swirl pattern entraining the resulting weeds.

The drama series Virgin River is the perfect TV escape. Set in a cozy town in California, the show is filmed somewhere else. Can you name the actual film location?
