so i didn't drive until the last year and i used public transit that whole time (about 17 years) and i find a lot of americans pleas for public transit disingenuous.

i've spent most of my life in a place that has a resoundingly mid public transit system, when i had the resources i lived in the most walkable part of the city, and when i move out of my dads it will be to a walkable city in a state i can afford. you can also pry my car and driving life from my cold dead fucking hands.

and i know the pleas are disingenuous because, like i know some parts of the country have zero public transportation so i'm not talking about you, but in my adulthood i've lived in my current california city and the bay area, which had much better public transit, and in both places people did not make the sacrifices to take the bus or train or whatever when they could. if you really care about increasing access to public transportation, by the way, this is what you SHOULD do. you use public transit, it indicates need, it's expanded.

but no. my life has been full, particularly of men though not exclusively, who wagged their finger at me for not driving and being lazy somehow, and then insisting they would start to also use public transit, and then using it MAYBE once and then never again. and never admitting that hey, it turns out, using public transit is hard, and that's without being a young assumed woman and dealing with the sexual harassment.

and look, i'm not trying to say you should care. i did my time, i'm fucking over it, i am pro car bitch. not having to walk for a half hour or take a train after work brings me downright orgasmic bliss. i could suck my own dick about driving a prius with great gas mileage but i'm gonna be real, that car was a gift, it's pure luck. that said, it's a choice i'd make again to offset my love of driving and the autonomy it brings. i'm just saying if you're honest about who you are and what you're willing to do, you can make better decisions that minimize those impacts. do you actually care about better public transit? or are you absolving yourself of any critical thought about your driving habits?
