post a few posts below this one on my dash names favoritism (and i also presume the treatment of chars who werent faves bc this user is v bitter abt bismuth and i sort of am, second-handedly, that she got rebubbled) and poor pacing as a few key issues
im coming to the realization, probably really late, that creators playing favoritism is pretty common. this is also a possibility, but it doesnt strike me as the only real reason for it, considering that favoritism has been a thing in significantly weaker stories that got popular for a long time

man i was just thinking abt the parallels between this & people mass-bouncing from homestuck earlier today...i suspect another factor (to touch on the last thing you mentioned) is that su was praised /so/ highly wrt representation & craftsmanship that it wound up pedestalized - to the degree that once more folks picked up on the weaknesses and/or narrative patterns that were, by & large, already there, the blowback wound up being Freaking Enormous
ooooh, thats a good point! i think a lot of people were expecting absolute perfection from SU when it always had weaknesses, but everyone saw it through rose colored glasses and the people who already decided they didnt like it from the beginning villified it immensely to the point they tended to just sound bitter over nothing
plus, it doesnt help that cartoon network seems absolutely determined to kill the show with the constant leaks, inconsistent release schedule, weak advertising, and limited merchandise
though, i think the dumbest complaint ive seen so far is that “the show has too much steven” when hes...the main character of the show...and there are very few kids shows (because this IS a kids show) that have episodes where the main character isnt in it. besides, we did have an episode like that and it was centered on ronaldo. avatar, another kids show that received huge praise while it was running, had aang be minimally present in some episodes, but he was always around in all of them, save for i think one where it was focused on the fire nation squad on their beach adventure
either way, i really hope the people working on the show at least get paid properly considering the messed up scheduling
