The reef was settling into the evening, the sun sank beyond the horizon as you and Ao’nung walked near shore. Earlier in the day, Ao’nung had asked you if you wanted to spend some time with him this evening, of course you said yes. You had been friends for a long time, long enough that the silence between you two felt familiar rather than awkward, yet right now it carried a different weight. He took your hand in his, giving you a small smile. The waves lapped softly at your feet as you walked, the water glowing faintly with life beneath the surface. You smiled back and spotted a place where you and him could sit and watch the waves, you suddenly started jogging in front of him, taking him by surprise. “__? “ he says, catching up to speed with you. You just turn your head and chuckle, pointing at the little spot. “ Come! Let us sit there. “ Ao’nung just nods and walks over to the spot with you. He cleared any leaves or fallen branches so you could sit comfortably and sat down, he leaned back, his left arm behind you. The air was cool, the moment unhurried, and something about the way the world slowed around you made it feel like this moment was more than just another evening by the shore.
For a moment, you two just sat there in silence. You listened to the ocean breathe in and out, the steady rhythm matching the calm rise and fall of your chest. Ao’nung would slowly give you small glances, at your eyes.. And maybe even at your lips. He told himself to snap out of it and just stared at the ocean. “ The.. ocean feels calmer when I’m with you. “ Ao’nung suddenly said, you turn your head to him and chuckle.. You move a bit closer to him and lean your head against his shoulder. Of course he doesn’t mind, he even rested his head on top of yours. A quiet smile tugged at his lips, unguarded and sincere, and you found yourself mirroring it without thinking. The sun now disappeared, the stars slowly appeared. Ao’nung pointed at the sky, you looked up and realised that he was pointing at a star. “That’s pretty. “ You comment, he nodded before turning to you. “ You want to see them clearer? “ You raised an invisible brow and let out a quick nod, he suddenly leaned you back and you both started to lay down together. It surprised you but it took you a couple of seconds to relax. You hesitantly put a hand on his chest, looking up at the stars. You could feel his nervousness, his heart beating fast. For a while, you stayed like that, the stars stretching endlessly above you. You rested your head on his arm, you could feel him shooting you tiny glances.. Like he was waiting for something. You tried to focus on the stars but your attention kept drifting back to the steady rise and fall of Ao’nung’s chest beneath your hand. The moon shined bright as the bioluminescence of the ocean glowed, the moment felt oddly intimate..you could feel your cheeks flushing up at the thought. “You okay?” Ao’nung had snapped you out of your thoughts and you looked up at him, the cold air blew on your back as you instinctively leaned in closer to him. “ Mhm. “ You reply quietly, your gaze now on his chest. Ao’nung studied your face for a long moment , as if memorizing it, you look up and you both stare at each other. “Tell me,” he says quietly, “has anyone ever looked at you like this before?”
You swallow, your fingers curling slightly against his chest as you keep eye contact. His eyes were brighter, softer than you’ve ever seen. “Like what?” You ask, your voice barely above the hush of the waves. His breath stutters, just a little. His thumb brushes gently over your knuckles, a simple touch that sends warmth through you. “Like I’m afraid to look away. “ You shake your head slowly, a quiet no. Something in Ao’nung’s expression shifts–relief and wonder.
He then leans in just a fraction, close enough that you can feel his breath against your lips. You look down at his lips before looking back up at his eyes.. Your face turns a bright purple. He paused, as if he was giving you time, as if asking without words whether this was okay. The ocean hums, you stare up at him and smile. That was like a trigger, he leaned in and closed the gap between you two. The kiss is soft and gentle, almost desperate like he’s been wanting this for a long time. His lips are warm and lingering, fitting against yours in a way that makes your chest ache. You melt into the kiss, his arm wrapped around your back, pulling you closer. The grip is tight, as if he’s afraid you might disappear.
He then pulls back slightly, his eyes closed with his forehead still resting against yours. He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and a small, breathless smile tugged at his lips. It was like this single kiss confirmed everything he’d been feeling but hadn’t dared to say. The stars shimmer above you, the ocean glowing softly nearby, and nothing feels uncertain anymore. You lean in to give him a peck on the lips and he just laughs, nuzzling his head into your neck. You both laid there, hearts still racing, listening to the ocean’s lullaby and letting the quiet of the night hold you together, knowing that nothing had to be said to make the moment feel complete.
