The thing about “you don’t think you deserve to be saved” as a line for Cas or Dean to quote back or reference to each other in fanfic is that... that’s not actually compatible with how either of them would have perceived it?? Like this isn’t the 10x09 burger date “I ain’t a role model”/“that’s not true”, this isn’t Cas fondly trying to bolster Dean’s view of himself in a way that it makes sense for either of them to call back to: it’s a profound and intimate moment, but it’s not that.

Like, Cas in Lazarus Rising isn’t really a person to Dean yet (cf “I'm not gonna believe that this thing is a freaking Angel of the Lord because it says so”); Dean’s memory of this isn’t someone telling him he deserves to be saved, it’s a frighteningly powerful new creature looking at him at his most vulnerable and seeing right through him. The creature might go on to become a “weird dorky little guy” to him, but that’s not the context in which he heard this. If anything, the connotations this line has for him are as an – unnervingly insightful – attempt to manipulate him, given the conclusion of the exchange is the fact that angels “have work for [him]”. It’s not going to stick as something ‘his pal Cas’ said.

And then from Cas’s point of view, this isn’t him saying something affirming to his dear-friend-who-he’s-in-love-with, this is Castiel, Angel of the Lord, looking at the traumatised Michael Sword (who he very recently saw torturing souls in hell lol) and being baffled that he thinks he doesn’t deserve to be saved. It’s about noting something fascinating and voicing it: it’s not about telling Dean anything.

And it is still a lot!!! This is still an incredibly charged exchange for a first meeting, to perceive and be perceived so completely!! But it’s something that they can really reference it to each other to make points about self worth, y’know?
