I head towards my room Supposedly to head to bed But the night is not done with me yet And instead of pajamas, it is coat and boots Keys in hand As I head out the door And into darkness Too restless within my own bones To be still I only meant to stay on the porch Supposedly for fresh air to clear my head But the night is not done with me yet And I hesitate on the edge of a run Blood pounding in my veins As my feet take me Deeper into darkness Daring me onwards Into woods, towards mountains, to the sea But I must be still So I only stay on campus Circling my little slice of world Hoping the night will be done with me yet Following orion’s chase across the horizon The plough, the dipper, as it dips forward In an unsteady procession, Cassiopeia Directly overhead In a march of ancient stories Woven into darkness Still echoing like the light of long-dead stars My head thrown back, I watch the stars spin Across the sky, and my head spins with them
