author’s note: this month’s music has a pretty strange variety. from daft punk, to doja cat, to kanye, to taylor swift the choice of music has been strange just like how i’ve been feeling this past month. also some songs on the playlist were on last month’s playlist linked here if you want to read about those songs.
Spice Girl - Aminé
with homecoming in october, this song brought back memories from my freshman homecoming 2 years ago. but that wasn’t why i had the song on repeat, “Spice Girl” is fun to dance around in my bedroom instead of doing my homework with the flute and the catchy chorus, the song made it on this month’s playlist.
Norman F*cking Rockwell - Lana Del Rey
typically i find the title track of an album to be quite forgettable or one of my least favorites. Lana however, starts the song with strings at the beginning of the album and song as she does with almost all her albums (a minor detail that i adore). “Norman F*cking Rockwell” in a way reminded me of Born to Die one of my favorite Lana albums (to be fair any Lana album is a favorite album of mine), as it was a title track that I liked. “Norman F*cking Rockwell” unlike, “Born to Die” is a men ain’t shit type song, reminding me of “child like” men i’ve met before. But the use of the color blue in the song represents sadness which is why this song made the playlist during sad girl autumn™.
Stronger - Kanye West
i have recently been having a lot of test and school work and would procrastinate to the point of barely having any sleep. i was also always down on myself for the grades and test scores i have received. “Stronger” however makes me feel invincible. Kanye’s use of german philosopher’s Friedrich Nietzsche, infamous quote “what doesn't kill you makes you stronger” was what gave me motivation to work my hardest. side note:i adore old kanye and miss him :(
Lover - Taylor Swift
i haven’t liked many of taylor’s music since 1989 back in middle school. but when i heard that she wanted to go back to her vulnerable style of songwriting for her new album, i was interested. “Lover” is super corny but reminds me of old country taylor that i love and remember. the song is a timid ballad that make me feel like the 🥰emoji.
Love Galore - SZA ft. Travis Scott
before i’ve written reflections on each of my monthly playlists, i always had “Love Galore” by SZA on almost all my playlists from back in 2018 and had it on repeat since 2017. the song helped me get over the stupidest crush i had in middle school by reminding me “men ain’t shit”. now i’ve done a favor to my mental health and have avoided boys for months now, but i still be bumping Ctrl, by SZA one of my favorite albums of all time and “Love Galore” never gets old.
Resentment - Beyoncé
as usual and mentioned multiple time in this post and others, i am sad. “Resentment” by Beyoncé is simply a heartbreak ballad that resonated with my constant mood of melancholy.
I Miss You - Beyoncé
having been written by Frank Ocean and on my favorite Beyoncé albums,“I Miss You” is one of my all time favorite songs by Beyoncé. listening to this song late at night, makes me miss loved ones and people who i’m not close to anymore.
Something About Us - Daft Punk
having has “Stronger” by Kanye on repeat, i was going back on old Daft Punk songs and listening to “Something About Us” gave me similar feelings to when i was listening to “I Miss You”.“Something About Us” was mostly instrumentals giving the song a chill and fun dance vibe, the single verse of the song in contrast was a refectory feel on either meeting someone you have a connection with or someone who was the one that got away.
Rules - Doja Cat
Doja Cat is often super corny with songs such as “Freak”, “Juicy” and the infamous “moo!” but are all guilty pleasures. but she came through with rules, having her flow compared to my favorite rapper Kendrick, was what made me give the song a listen and i was immediately hooked and had it on repeat since its release. the line “Said play with my p*ssy, but don't play with my emotions” will be something I will quote quite often.
Jasmine - Lil Halima
not gonna lie, i found out this song one day by typing my name in spotify and seeing if anything would come up. this song came up under songs and i gave it a listen expecting it to be some sketchy soundcloud type song. instead it was a mixture of rnb and rap about someone leaving the singer for a girl named Jasmine. i have to admit it made me feel guilty because my name is jasmine, but Lil Halima’s angelic singing of “Say you gotta go, (Say you gotta go), Sleeping on her pillow” was what made me fall in love with this song.
Sandcastles - Beyoncé
although i personally don’t agree about the forgiveness for someone who cheated, i however adore “Sandcastles”. “Sandcastles” is a simple song, with just piano backing the vocals, but the lyrics however carry heavy emotional baggage, making me repeat in honor of sad girl autumn™
Space Cowboy - Kacey Musgraves
despite the fact that i have a distaste for most country music, i do have have a soft spot for female singers like Dolly Parton and of course Kacey Musgraves. when i first listened to “Space Cowboy” i thought it was going to be the literal title with cowboys in space. instead, it was something better, a song about letting someone go with yee haw™ analogies.
