#3742 - Lilium lancifolium - Tiger Lily
Named for the lance-shaped leaves, by Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg, from specimens collected in Japan. In Japan they're called oniyuri, which means ogre-lily. Also known as L. tigrinum, until it was realised lancifolium had precedence.
December was a bit late for the flowers, which look like this -
Native to the Far East of Asia, but widely grown as an ornamental, and naturalised in parts of the US. It's also grown and foraged for the edible bulbs and flowers, but is extremely poisonous to cats.
