Oh? What’s this?
A kitty in a pillow fort she made from a single pillow.
My cat is weird about pets. Most cats are some flavor of weird about pets but Lilith has a system I have not seen other cats use before. She likes pets on her cheeks and the base of her tail, but that is it. Sometimes the chin, but only when she shoves her chin down onto your hand. Lots of cats will walk around and rub their face against your hand to show you how they like to be pet. And Lilith will do a bit of that occasionally when she’s really excited, but that’s not her main system.
Most of the time Lilith sits on or near me, with her back facing me, and looks over her shoulder on the side she wants petted. I’ve spent a few months wondering how she came up with this system, and come up empty. Why does she turn in on the side she wants petted, rather than the usual turning away to curve into a pet? Why is she so fussy if I spend more than a second not petting her exactly and exclusively on the cheek she wants scritched? She’s been very particular about it since before I recognized this was a specific signal she was giving. How did she figure out that worked in the first place?
Well today I figured it out. It’s how she turns so she can scratch her cheeks with her back leg. It’s the same pose. I’m her legs now.
The first summer that we had Lilith, I put ice in a bowl of water for her. She was so playful, I figured she’d at least find it interesting to sniff at a bit.
She didn’t care.
She patiently walked over with me when I called her, looked at the ice, looked at me, and went on about her business.
It’s been two years since then. I usually keep a cup of water near wherever I’m hanging out. The cup itself is uninteresting. I managed to use them for months without any incident. The first time I put ice into that cup, however, it became the second most fascinating object on the planet. (The first is Lilith’s fish toy. She loves her fiiiiiyush).
Now I can’t sit anywhere without Lilith inspecting my cup the second I put it down. Any cup found with condensation will be licked thoroughly. They have lids, thank goodness, but they will tip and spill at least a bit if someone, as a wild example, bats at the ice inside with a little cat paw.
My cats if I shift slightly in my sleep in the middle of the night:
**urgently rubbing their little faces on my hands and putting their paws on my eyelids repeatedly**
“Human! Human you have to pet us right now. Wake up! We need all of the pets immediately!”
My cats when I get out of bed, because it’s not like I can sleep anyways:
Absolutely conked out. So sleepy. 20-30 pounds of honk shoo mimimi upon ye. I didn’t even feed them in between these two events.
