:flame: on Feminist Studies and Gender Studies academia and classes
Two that might seem contradictory but bear with me:
Gender studies/women’s studies makes more sense to me as a lens to apply to something else than a separate field, and I like systems like my undergrad where at the undergrad level (not the grad level, which is fine) it’s only available as a minor and not as a major. IME people who only focus on women’s studies and not also whatever broader field they focus on are really, really bad at that field, and really bad at applying feminist theory to it! This is especially common IME in any kind of media studies and in history.
The other one is that as much as anti-SJ Tumblr used to love complaining about “lol women’s studies majors” I think the problem with Tumblr feminism is not enough exposure to actual feminist theorists and academics. People here would be better off if they took more women’s studies courses!
