my own worst enemy by lily lindon
After reading a lot of fantasy in May/June, I felt like a queer romance was exactly what I needed to cleanse the palate. And I am so glad I chose this one.
I had seen it around as it’s available on Kindle Unlimited, but what actually brought me to read this book was picking it up from my local library earlier this week.
Lily Lindon crafts a wickedly funny little book here, all about ambition, love and family. I adored how it subtly tackled stereotyping in queer female relationships, the idea that ‘butch’ women can only be into ‘femme’ women and the shocking lack of representation in the media. Lindon also did a wonderful job of presenting how dangerous miscommunication can be to relationships; enough that at times I felt myself wanting to scream at Emmy for her clumsy wording and reassure Mae that everything was going to be okay.
The side characters in this were fab too, even if I did see some of the twists coming. You can’t escape that all the time and it didn’t distract me too much from the enjoyment of the book as a whole.
The ending was wonderfully sweet, and I admit that I did have a couple of tears in my eyes as I closed the book for the final time. I just love a positive queer love story, especially when it differs even a little from the many m/m stories I’ve read over the years.
All in all, a lovely debut from Lily Lindon and I look forward to seeing what the brings out next.
