WHERE: outside a restaurant, downtown. WHO: @lilywhittaker & nate.
He watched the spot Verity had disappeared for a long moment, the tightness in his chest never seeming inclined to loosen its death grip. He considered, for the second time, if he should just cancel. It was too late, he knew, but he wasn’t in any shape to make good company. Lily deserved better than what he had to offer. His eyes trailed back to the spot she’d been.
Everyone deserved better.
He rolled his shoulders and tried to gather what remaining pride and self-possession he had left. He headed for the restaurant, spotting Lily. “Hey,” he said, his voice injected with false levity. “I didn’t get a chance to grab a table yet, I’m sorry.” He smiled, and while it was mostly forced, it was still nice to see one person in town that always seemed pleased to see him. “Thanks for coming out. I know it was sort of last minute.”
