.𖥔 ݁˖ You grimaced when one of Kuvira’s soldiers used metalbending to produce a sharp piece of metal to emerge from the cuff of their uniform and slice into the flesh of your abdomen. Blood started to stain your shirt, the metallic smell wafting in the surrounding air as it invaded your senses. You covered the wound with one of your hands, hoping the pressure against it would help, and using your legs to kick a wall of bright flames towards the soldier.
You hissed in pain as your vision had begun to blur — whether from tears or not was unclear — and your legs got weak, making it hard to stand. Luckily the soldier seemed preoccupied with Bolin and changed targets unexpectedly.
Before long your knees had buckled, and you were in a sort of kneeling position.
You just needed to rest for a few seconds.
Only a few seconds…
Your mind begun to think about your earlier conversation with Lin.
—
You had decided to join Lin, Bolin, and Opal (eventually Toph as well) to rescue Suyin and her husband and sons — much to Lin’s disapproval. She made it fairly obvious she didn’t want you joining them.
Why? Because she didn’t want you getting captured if the worst were to happen.
She wouldn’t know what to do with herself if you got captured.
The whole ride on Opal’s sky bison to the Earth Empire, Lin was silently thinking of every possible outcome. Good and bad. You had noticed the silence, feeling the underlying tension and worry that flowed around her.
You reached your hand out and tightly grasped hers. You warmed your hand in hopes that it would soothe her. “I’ll be fine, you know.” You said reassuringly.
Lin looked over, raising an eyebrow. “I didn’t say you wouldn’t be.” She stated professionally.
You smiled, squeezing her hand. “Your thoughts are saying otherwise. I can tell.” You hummed before continuing, “You get that look in your eyes, and your fingers twitch in a specific way.”
Lin frowned, rolling her eyes. “I don’t do that.” She grumbled, using her free hand to pinch the middle of her nose bridge. “You can’t ‘hear’ my thoughts either.” She added.
You kept your smile, amused now. While Lin denied all of these facts, both you and her knew very well how far the truth stretched. She was a softie at heart, and you knew how deeply she cares about you.
“It’s alright, Lin. I promise I’ll be okay.” You whispered, leaning in to land a gentle, fleeting kiss onto the other woman’s cheek. The way you murmured her name made her melt the tiniest bit. She gazed over at you, muted green eyes capturing your gaze once more. Except, this time her irises only revealed a soft hint of worry.
“You better promise. I don’t even want to see Kuvira — or her army — lay a simple mark on you.” Lin stated, eyebrows furrowing.
“Yes chief!” You chirped, raising your hand in a salute. Lin couldn’t help but let out an amused huff, the tension visibly draining from her shoulders. You merely grinned.
Your hand still held her’s with warmth, grounding and constant. The whole ride there your hand didn’t move once.
And neither did her’s.
—
It seems you were going to have to break that promise because now you were out of shape, and the pain in your abdomen was starting to feel unbearable.
You looked around, taking in your surroundings. Everyone was fighting. Grunts and yells were the only thing audible aside from the clanking of Kuvira’s mechs. Dust contaminated the air, stinging your eyes and definitely not helping your injuries in the slightest.
Finding an open chance to escape to find enough cover to rest your weakening body properly until the fighting ended, you took it. Getting up from your kneeling position, you started to sprint to a warehouse.
Pain was echoing through your limbs, and you were positive you weren’t even sprinting — maybe just stumbling quickly. Your lungs ached and begged for you to stop, but you persevered anyways, getting closer to the warehouse.
Everything seemed okay.
You didn’t hear the small rectangular pieces of metal that wizzed through the air straight for you. Kuvira had spotted you trying to hide, and she obviously wasn’t going to have that.
A piece found your wrists, curling and acting as cuffs. Another piece cuffed your ankles, making you stumble with a groan into the earth.
And if it couldn’t get worse, you felt your body lifting a couple feet in the air. Your frantic gaze registered on Kuvira, finally processing that she was using her metalbending to put you in your predicament. One of her arms stretched out, before bending at the elbow horizontally in the direction of her chest like she was about to let go of something.
She was about to let go of you.
When her arm snapped back into its previous position, you felt your body quickly be flung. Wind shrieked in your ears. Time seemed to slow only for a few, almost peaceful moments before your back hit the metal side of the warehouse.
A broken noise between a cry and a sob left your throat from the impact. Pain reverberated in your bones, you couldn’t even tell what was the cause of it anymore.
Your body slide down the side, hitting the ground stomach first like a measly lump of rocks — and to Kuvira you were just a lump of rocks. The wind had been knocked out of you, leaving you disoriented and completely unable to muster the strength to get up.
Your gaze shifted to the fighting around you once more. You felt the warm oozing of blood trickling down the right side of your face. You instinctively closed that eye (or attempted to at least), trying to focus on the environment. You noticed the faintly numbing, viscous, coppery tang of blood in your mouth, coating your palate and gums. A sliver starting to drip in thick globs out of the corner of your mouth.
Your vision was starting to become doubled, dizzying and starting to slant. The noise of everything around you begun to fade out, only leaving a loud ringing in your ears. You could barely register people coming towards you.
By the time their faces became visible, you had already passed out cold.
—
The first thing you heard was the worried tone of Bolin and Opal. You couldn’t exactly make out the proper words, or who said what at the given time, but you caught little things like:
“My aunt is so worried, Kya!”
“Will she wake up soon? It’s been almost 3 days! Pabu misses playing with her!”
You grunted quietly, beginning to stir as you tried to move your muscles underneath the sheets of the bed you were lying on. When you were able to wiggle your fingers and toes, you let your eyelids flutter open.
You immediately begun to squint from the bright sunlight that filtered through the room past the blinds, groaning and moving your head to the side to face away from the sun and looking in the room.
The bed was pressed against a wall, and a nearby table had bandages, medicines, and such on top of it. The room resembled a room in Air Temple Island.
“You’re up!!” Opal exclaimed, immediately rushing over to your side and grabbing your hand. Bolin followed suit, smiling at you. Pabu had chirped excitedly, jumping off Bolin’s shoulder and curling up in a ball next to your head on the pillow.
“Are you okay? Do you feel better?” Opal rapid fired questions, eyeing the bandages on your forehead and anywhere else visible.
You smiled reassuringly, gently petting Pabu as you listened to Opal. “Just sore, not much to worry about.” You replied.
“Alright you two — and Pabu — I had let you stay here every day, so now I want you two to get proper rest instead of worrying about her.” Kya said with a bit of sternness, beginning to usher them out. Pabu whimpered but reluctantly climbed back onto Bolin’s shoulder as they exited.
You waved your goodbyes to the two before watching Kya close the door and facing you again.
“You caused quite a scare you know?” She hummed, helping you sit up properly so she could replace the old bandages with new, clean ones.
“Yeah.. I figured — ow!” You grimaced, instinctively pulling away from Kya.
Kya’s smile softened into concern, “Your ribs are still bruised, and so is your abdomen, I could only do so much. Try to relax okay?” She sighed, being more slow with the process to avoid you being in more pain.
“Alright.” You nodded, gazing flickering to your hands. They’ve seen better days.
“Where’s Lin?” You asked after a few moments, realizing you didn’t see her when you woke up.
“I told her to get some rest before visiting you today.” Kya answered, applying gauze to your wounds.
You stared at her in silence, hoping she’d elaborate.
Luckily, she did.
“The three days you were out, she sat next to you the entire time — or whenever she was free from her chief duties, that is. Poor woman was pacing the entire time I was healing your serious injuries.” Kya explained, wrapping a clean white bandage around your abdomen now.
“She ended up falling asleep in the chair a few times, holding your hand the entire time. A few other times I saw her with her head on your lap, and I can’t imagine that to be good for her back,” she continued, “so yesterday I had to do some tough love and force her to actually sleep in her bed so her back wouldn’t suffer anymore.”
You couldn’t stop the slight smile that formed on your lips. “Yeah, sounds like her.” You hummed in acknowledgment.
“She loves you a lot. I don’t think I’ve seen her be that worried in a while.” Kya smiled, easing your back to rest against the pillows so that you could still sit, just better for your back and ribs.
Your mouth was beginning to open to say “thank you” but before you could get a single syllable out the door swung open.
It was Lin. Wearing a white tank top and panting like she just ran as fast as she could to make it there. Without any further delay she crossed the room in only a few strides and immediately hugged you. The hug was loose on purpose, making sure not to worsen your injuries.
Kya smiled at the sight. Both you and her locked eyes when you rested your head on Lin’s shoulder, hugging her back tightly (or as tight as you could without feeling sore).
“Thank you.” You mouthed to Kya, returning her smile as she quietly slipped out of the room and closing the door behind her with a quiet click.
“Opal told me you woke up. How are you?” Lin asked, worry evident in her entire body.
Kya wasn’t lying when she said Lin was worried.. but you also did sleep for 3 days and now have bruised ribs and countless other injuries — both small and large — so you weren’t too surprised.
“Feeling better, just sore. How about you? Your under eyes look darker, hun.” You replied, gently cupping her cheeks and letting your thumb rub against her skin soothingly.
“That doesn’t matter. I’m just happy you’re safe.” Lin deflected, the tension in her body now easing into relief. She sat down onto the chair next to you, moving it closer to the bed.
You both just sat there in silence for a few minutes. Just staring at each other with so much love it seemed nothing else mattered in the moment.
“I’m sorry I broke my promise…” You sighed after a while of thinking about what to say. You stared down at your hands. You could still feel those cuffs around them, even when they weren’t there at all.
“Yeah. You should be.” Lin muttered, crossing her arms and making a small tsk sound.
“You must be tired still, Kya told me that you have barely slept in the last few days.” You whispered sympathetically, beginning to frown.
Lin sighed, “How is it that when you’re all bruised up and sore you still make sure my needs are taken care of before you ever address your own?” She asked, shaking her head.
“Becuase I know you.” You answered, “I know how you get when you are worried. You forget to eat and sleep, and you drown yourself in work before constantly thinking about whatever it is you’re worried about.” You stated, staring at your bandages on your hands.
Lin stayed silent for a few moments not confirming nor denying.
Instead, she seemed to be contemplating something.
“Move over.” She said abruptly.
“What?” You asked.
“Just- just move over.” She repeated, making a shooing gesture with her hands.
You moved over like Lin asked, leaving space for her on the — albeit small — bed. You were agains the wall now. She arose from the chair, putting it back in its original spot before lying down next to you.
Lin’s strong arms held you securely while still being mindful of your soreness. Lying on her back, she guided your head to rest on her chest.
“There, now we’re both happy. I will be able to rest while still making sure you’ll be safe, and you’ll be able to make sure I’m actually sleeping.” Lin hummed, a faint smile on her lips as she kissed the top of your head.
You smiled in content as you shifted closer to her, draping an arm over her torso underneath the blanket.
“Are you cold or anything?” You asked, “I can be a heater if you need it.” You continued, raising your head to give her a soft peck on the lips.
“That would be nice.” Lin sighed peacefully, allowing her eyelids to close and now resting her eyes. That smile had never left her face, instead melting into a serene, warm calmness that only seems to appear when it’s just a moment between you and her.
You begun to use your firebending to steady raise your body heat enough to be comforting but not overwhelmingly warm.
After maybe fifteen minutes, you heard Lin begin to snore, confirming she had fallen asleep. She had even fallen asleep before you — which only solidified your concern that she was lacking sleep before you had woken up.
You gazed up at her sleeping face. Her lashes fluttered occasionally, and her mouth was slightly agape. She looked younger now, less stressed too. You raised your dominant hand and let it rest on her left cheek. Your thumb gently caressed the two jagged scars with the utmost care.
You let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding and slowly begun to memorize her features like you always did when you were either bored or just in the mood of appreciating her.
And for the next hour or so you did just that. Appreciating everything about her until you too had drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
Recovery wouldn’t be that bad — and besides you had an excuse to want to cuddle with your wife even more than you already did.
