Please read the full article by Marquisele Mercedes. Lindo’s extremely selfish actions are so telling. I am indebted to Mikey for her transparency and for putting in the exhausting labor to inform everyone of her experience.

For those who don’t know, Dr. Lindo Bacon is the author of Heath At Every Size and has been the face of the HAES movement since it began.

Here is an excerpt from Mikey’s article:

“Lindo was disingenuous about the project having space for my ideas. They proposed the HAES rewrite as something that necessitated a major rework of HAES and my specific critical lens when they were really just looking for a fat Black person that they could use as a show pony to point at as an example of both how charitable they are with ~leveraging their privilege~ as well as use to write complex, nuanced discussions of fatness, Blackness, disability, and other axes of oppression that they could also take credit for. And when it became clear I was not willing to play the role they wanted to force me into, they pivoted to seeing if they could still purchase my expertise via a ghostwriting arrangement that meant they would take full credit for my work without having to meet my needs as a co-author. This is on top of the fact that during this conversation, Lindo clearly articulated that they have no intention of stepping out of the spotlight or relinquishing their power over the fat people they claim to advocate for even when one of those fat people tells them very plainly that their continued hypervisibility is harmful.”

If you're immersed in self-help circles or follow mainstream magazines, sometimes it seems as if we're being recruited into the cult of authenticity. At every turn, we're encouraged to be ourselves, to show up authentically. Yet what doesn't get articulated is the back story, that a call to authenticity is politically laden and the path heavily influenced by privilege and disadvantage. It's a lot easier to be your authentic self when the world tells a story that your authentic self has value. Many of us become estranged from our authentic selves because we learn that those authentic selves aren't valued. We're forced to perform acceptable selves or hide pieces of ourselves (when possible) in order not to be punished, scorned, laughed at, rejected, bullied, or discriminated against. Inauthenticity becomes a survival tactic, a war raged on our true selves that generates shame and disconnection. We direct the pain at ourselves, sometimes taking the form of depression, anxiety, self-harm, substance abuse, even diabetes. We never truly know if the people we're interacting with actually care about us, which can be soul-assassinating. It's like gaslighting ourselves. We're then engaged in pseudo-intimacy, which is laborious rather than nourishing. True intimacy, on the other hand, flourishes when we come together as our authentic selves. True intimacy is life-giving and energy-boosting. It's where empathy, compassion, and care blossom. There are limits to the intimacy possible, however, when you have to present your socially acceptable self rather than your authentic self, when you're on guard and managing impressions. Have you ever felt like the people at work or school don't really know you, so it's a profound relief to get home and drop the facade? Can you even drop the facade at home? When we cannot be ourselves, we are deprived of authentic relationships we can trust. We are deprived of belonging.

Injustice will continue to rain down on us from on high. But let us remember that no policy can get enacted without complicity along the way.

Laws and policies don’t execute themselves by magic. They have to be carried out by people. Therein lies more of our power.

Walls can’t get built if workers refuse to lay the concrete, if individuals and municipalities boycott the companies that would build them, if shareholders vote appropriately at shareholder meetings or sell their stock, if people dance on the ground intended for division.

…without a body, you don’t exist. We are not separable from our bodies. We are our bodies, and to make someone feel that they can’t be at home in their body—the source of their life—is a death wish visited upon them. To make matters worse, the way socialization works is that in pursuit of belonging, we get enlisted into committing crimes against ourselves and our own bodies. Those of us outside the mythical norm become targets. We are under unrelenting pressure to modify our perceived bodily failings. To survive, we have to objectify our own bodies and can’t relax into them. We can’t belong, not even to ourselves.

When we’re quick to anger or we dive into depression, it can feel like something’s wrong with us. It’s better conceptualized as the way we embody our world. There are smart reasons you do the things you do—it’s about a self-protection system that sometimes goes awry. So much of our response to our day-to-day lives is rooted in brain chemistry, which adapts in response to coping with stressors like trauma, inequity, and hard circumstances. Depression, anxiety, anger, reactivity, hypervigilance, distrust, and substance abuse are just normal, adaptive, and self-protective strategies. How we act is a response to the crap we deal with.
