Aunty Mandy is not often in town. So Uncle had the opportunity over Queen’s Birthday Weekend to go makan before she jets off again. What a life (for her)! We both felt like Xiao Long Bao so off we went to Chu Long Ji on Link Drive, Wairau Valley. The XLB did not disappoint; there are 5 different types, 2 of which are specials on the weekends. The XLB are indeed soupy, the pork does not have “sao wei”. Under the previous chef, the XLB skin was finer/thinner and had the mandatory 18 pleats. Not so much now and there are only 13 pleats. But the pleats are mostly cosmetic so we can’t have everything. We started our Shanghainese cuisine meal with soup: pork ribs with corn and chicken. With the dry noodles in scallion, oil and soy sauce, the accompaniments were steamed chicken in shaoxing wine and a green of okra, lightly steamed, and served with wasabi and soya sauce dressing. Aunty was suitably impressed with the meal. #chulongji #chulongjichineserestaurant #linkdrive #wairauvalley #shanghainesecuisine #xiaolongbao #porkribscornsoup #chickensoup #steamchicken #shaoxingwine #okra #ladiesfinger #drynoodles (at Chu Long Ji) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByMkTS5pJBZ/?igshid=6ky02p4ml6re
