“So, listen-don’t give me that look-my apartment has to be renovated because it’s really old and even the air is messed up-there’s mold! Anyway, I was wondering if maybe I could possibly, please, stay here, please? Because the last time I was at a hotel-” “Woah, woah, calm down. Of course you can stay over.” Lin said, effectively cutting off my speech and making my heart twist in two different ways.
You see, I like Lin. Like, like like. Yes, because that clarifies things, (Y/N). So, I absolutely adored how he was always so sweet. And understanding. And-well, there’s a lot of other things I like about him. Such as...
-How he always tries to stay strong for those he loves
-How he’ll do anything for those he loves
-The way his happiness is infectious
-How he wakes people up in the morning with his coffee
The other way my heart clenched is because I couldn’t be with him. Hell, he’s a single parent, he stars in a Broadway Musical, he’s way out of my league... he’s him. And I’m me. To him, I’m just a close friend, a sister, maybe a part-time babysitter. But I doubt that he could ever see me romantically.
As this crisis ran through my head, I had stepped into the apartment and put my stuff next to the couch-where I didn’t notice Sebastian until his small arms had wrapped around mine in a sort of hug. “Hey! Sebby! How’s my favorite Miranda, hmm?” I cooed at him as I picked him up.
After fawning over Seb for about 20 minutes, Lin finally told me it was time for his nap. I reluctantly handed him over and went to get myself some water. As I was walking over to the couch, I heard soft singing. I perked up and placed the water bottle down. Following the sound of Lin’s voice, I found myself in the door of the nursery. Sebastian was in the crib that Lin and I had made, bundled in blankets and clutching the stuffed bunny I got him at Christmas. Lin was leaning against the crib bars and had one arm in the crib, which Seb was holding tightly with one arm. Dear Theodosia. I realized. That was his lullaby.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW! the me inside my head screamed. Shut up. I told mini me. I leaned against the doorway, in a trance. It was only when he reached the third to last line that I managed to break myself out of the daze and scramble back to the living room, looking as if I’d been watching what was on T.V.-Chuggington.
Lin came over and raised an eyebrow. “Chuggington?” he asked. “Yeah! Yeah, of course! I-I love Chuggington. Y’know, with the-with red train and the yellow one... Good times.” I said. You see, this is why I can’t be an actress. “Uh huh. Okay, sure, why not?” Lin responded as he settled next to me.
That night I awkwardly shuffled to the hall closet and started pulling out a blanket. “What are you doing?” Lin’s amused voice came from behind. “Um, getting a blanket for-” “For the couch? Yeah, I don’t think so. You’re sleeping in the bed, I’ll take the couch.” Lin said as he took the blanket. “Wait, wait, no,” I started as I pulled the blanket toward me. “I’m sleeping on the couch, this is your house.” I reasoned, but the blanket was taken from me once again. “And you are my guest and best friend.” Another tug from me. “So? I’ve slept in worse places. Like my dining room table. The couch will be wonderful.” I replied.
Before Lin could argue or pull the blanket away again, I said “Or we could both sleep in the bed. It’s not like we’ve never done it before.” And that is how I ended up laying in Lin’s bed, back to back. I couldn’t sleep. I kept fantasizing about this being my life-though, maybe less awkward. I’d go to sleep with Lin at night, tend to Sebastian most times as well as I wanted Lin to sleep because Lord knows he doesn’t get much of it. Always writing, that genius. But he did spend time with his friends and family, but in most of his free time he was working on some sort of song or other.
Before long, I heard a light snore. I smiled gently. I laid there for a few minutes in silence, other than Lin’s snoring, when he suddenly turned toward me. He was still asleep, I could tell, but that didn’t stop the blush from crawling up my neck to my cheeks and to my ears when he tossed an arm around me. Lin tugged me forward into his chest, wrapped his other arm around me, and rested his head on mine.
At this point I was grinning, but yeah. I was very happy. Eventually, I did manage to fall asleep, wrapped in Lin’s arms, head buried in chest, arms around his torso, and grinning like mad... but I was awoken not long after.
Sebastian’s sharp cry pierced the air and we both instantly shot up. Lin and I groggily untangled ourselves and I rolled out of bed. “Where-” “I’ve got him. Get back to sleep.” I mumbled gently. He sighed deeply and flopped back on the bed.
Shuffling out of the room, I noticed how cold it was. I frowned at the air. Why’d Lin keep it so cold, only to complain and turn it down in the morning. I rolled my eyes and finally made it to Seb’s room, where the wailing had not ceased. I walked to the crib and he stopped crying as he stared at me in confusion and/or wonder (hehehheheh) for a moment. But then the daze was broken and he started crying again.
My eyebrows furrowed as I reached down and scooped him up. Cradle with both arms, support the neck and head. I repeated the mantra that the doctor had told Lin and I when we went to the doctor’s office. I settled in the rocking chair that I had bought what seemed like forever ago. I started humming ‘Safe and Sound’ quietly. Not after long, Sebastian was asleep again. But the problem with that-so was I. I woke up in the morning with Lin bent in front of me, hand on my shoulder, and Sebastian missing from my arms.
“Sebastian-” I started, with a panicked tone. “Is in the kitchen eating scrambled eggs.” he finished in a calm voice, one eyebrow raised. Damn, that’s really cu-stop it, (Y/N)!
And after the first day, that was how most days went-though usually, I would remember to put Sebastian back in the crib.
Yet again, a cry ripped through the peace. Lin sat up but I pulled him back down and sat up. “I’ve got him.” I tried to murmur, but thankfully, Lin seemed to get the gist as he turned and cuddled into the blanket. I smiled fondly and walked out of the room, bumping into the wall a few times along the way. I hurriedly entered the nursery and scooped Seb up. I proceeded to walk to the rocking chair-which Lin had declared as mine-and rocked him gently, humming ‘Part of Your World’ from the Little Mermaid.
That morning, I woke up with Lin’s arm wrapped round my waist and the other thrown haphazardly over his face. My face was buried in the crook of his neck, my hand resting on his chest.
Sebastian’s wails filled Lin’s and my ears. We had had a late night, and we were on our fourth movie. “(Y/N), I got him this time. You’ve been doing it, I mean, he’s my son.” Lin quickly said as he slipped his arm from around my shoulders. I jerked my head up, but it started to droop. I nodded as Lin laughed. “Go to sleep, you crazy person.” he insisted. “Uh huh.” I muttered.
I sat up a split second before Sebastian started crying. I nodded kudos to my brain’s internal clock, or whatever. I massaged Lin’s shoulder for a minute, as a gesture of ‘got it’, before springing out of bed and speed-walking down the hall. This was early, for sure, but that wasn’t what was unusual about the situation. His cries were more urgent than most times.
I burst through the door and picked Sebby up. I kissed his forehead and frowned. He was hot. Sebastian’s cries had gone down slightly and were now whimpers as he snuggled against my chest. I lifted him so that his head could rest on my shoulder. I started humming as I stepped out of the room, tensing when I heard him cough. I quickly made my way to the phone and called Sebastian’s doctor. He diagnosed it as a common cold and told me to let him rest as much as possible, eat foods that sick people normally eat (like soup and stuff), and to give him lots of fluids. “Alright Dr. Hansen. Thank you. I can stop by tomorrow to pick up a prescription.” I said as I faintly heard footsteps in the hall.
I was still bouncing Seb. “Oh, um, y-yes. That’s fine. I-I should have it ready by-by two ‘o clock.” he responded. “Thanks again, Evan. You’re really a lifesaver.” I told him. I felt a hand rest on my shoulder that was not being occupied by Sebby’s head. “Okay, bye then.” I said as I hung up. Spinning around, I came face to face with none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda.
“Hey, what’s up?” he asked in a gravelly voice. I cleared my throat and explained Seb’s cold. “Oh. Alright then. Chicken soup for lunch and dinner it is. Yay.” he said sarcastically. I smiled at him and he wrapped an arm around my back (where my shoulder blades were). I leaned into his side and we sat on the couch together, waiting for Sebastian to go to sleep.
“Hey, buddy.” Lin’s voice was soft and gentle. “Yeah?” Seb asked. “Listen, how about you sleep with (Y/N/N) and I tonight.” Lin offered. “Okay, daddy. Like sleepin’ with you and mommy.” he mumbled. Lin and I both froze and went pale. Though he couldn’t pronounce some words correctly, Sebastian could say complete sentences-more or less. But he’d never called me ‘mommy’ before.
And of course, it was only minutes after that Sebastian was asleep in our arms. We walked wordlessly to the bedroom and I gently laid him down. “Wow. My kid’s calling you mom and you’re the one that sighs and tells me ‘I’ll go take care of this’ in the middle of the night. We might as well be married.” Lin joked. We both sat down on the edge of the bed. My heart fluttered and started beating so loud that Chile had to hear it. Blood rushed in my ears as I leaned closer.
“(Y/N)...?” Lin said with a questioning tone. “Well, if we were married... I’d be able to do this, right?” I asked as I leaned closer. Our lips were centimeters apart. “Of course.” Lin breathed. “And if we were married, I’d most likely get to do this.” Lin stated before pushing his lips against mine. I smiled and kissed back. His tongue swiped against my bottom lip. I happily opened and gave him access. Our tongues lazily wrestled for domanince (to lazy to search up proper spelling, lol). After a few minutes, we breathlessy pulled apart.
“I, um... really like you.” I said nervously. Lin only laughed. “Well, I’d hope so, you just made out with me.” he responded. “Ha ha.” I retorted lamely.
