The Spectre that is Budots
respects to DJ Love and to all budots mixers. ~ budots is often considered low art. some institutions treat playing budots music as taboo. others would further claim that budots dancers and musicians are influenced by illegal drugs or are possessed by demonic entities.
i do not advocate for budots to become the opposite of low art. i like it the way it is now because it's these preconceived notions that give budots its inescapable, spectral power.
partner budots with a rather serious instance and either it becomes more tensed or it disintegrates into something of no value, or both. budots can build or destroy or do both at the same time. budots is lamaw*.
such power radiates in these two videos (links below), which are separated by time of posting and social issue at hand, but are nonetheless very linked. before you reach those links, i'd like to share a budots characteristic that i know youve noticed as well—it takes snippets of existing media outputs and strategically integrates them in a budots techno music. this process falls under the art practice called bricolage.
this bricolagic** practice does not only manifest in audio formats but also in videos.
footages that become "faces" of these issues are often reinvented (or bastardized) by cutting or repeating certain parts or utterances (i.e. "hala mahulog-log-log-log") to make them suitable cutouts for a budots music. the fact that there's a process of cutting and repeating suggests that budots has a sense of defined procedure and is therefore something that has structure.
below is the structure that ive observed in some notable short-duration budots music:
1. premise - the short footage, either unadulterated or layered with minimal ad-libs.
2. beat drop - a key part of the footage, mostly that which contain an utterance, is repeated with the beat (16 or 32 counts).
3. interlude 1 - either beat is at rest or on going but layered with an ad-lib.
4. second beat drop - another key part of the footage is repeated with the beat, may or may not be layered with a new sound (16 or 32 counts).
5. interlude 2.
6. third beat drop. may go on to interlude 3 and fourth beat drop.
7. return - the budots beats are gone, the footage's final frames are unadulterated, serves as a sort of framing.
i believe that it's in this structure that budots derives its inescapable, spectral power, especially the short-duration budots.
budots has the capacity to start from somewhere very real and grounded, then to transform into something else. contrary to mainstream music that starts when the melody starts, budots may opt to start with a premise, with a real footage, then plays with it, then brings you back to reality.
this use of reality-music-reality structure, this ostranenie*** innate in budots forces us to rethink our own biases, and re-evaluate ourselves why we find the issue offensively danceable.
budots has the capacity to extend the length of perception of the issue at hand through repetitive techno so to make the familiar issue "unfamiliar" and in effect, prevent ourselves from being issue-sanitized
through budots, new meaning is derived from something initially very familiar.
being a subaltern form of expression, budots remains as a very influential device for filipinos who are generally economically subaltern.
nonetheless i argue that this will change once budots becomes the opposite of low art, which may be inevitable. might as well exploit or at least study its power before it comes to a coda.
in a sense, budots is currently undergoing its own process, now being in an interlude of its own music. and perhaps the more we extend our perception of budots, the more meanings we derive.
and then finally, when it brings us back to reality, hopefully, we become more intelligent and evaluative filipinos, unsanitized by the issues we see in the community, and self-aware of our own biases.
