Gabriel must’ve seen the way Castiel was looking at Dean, because at that point his smile took a devilish turn and just muttered “Huh, figures” to himself. While Castiel wasn’t paying attention to his brother, but towards the most gorgeous person he had ever laid eyes on, who just a couple of days ago actually acknowledged his presence next to him in Sciece class, Gabriel just couldn’t let his brother go that easily. “Well, I just wanted to make sure you were alright and that you left him in looking wose than he did you”, and then, because Castiel was cursed with a brother like Gabriel, he added “Oh, I know him from somewhere, isn’t he the guy from your computer?”
At that moment Castiel snapped out of his gaze, whipping his head back to quiet his brother “What, I don’t know what you’re talking about, I don’t-“
But then Gabriel addresses Dean who had stopped a couple of feet before them to lean against the wall and apparently wait for their conversation to come to an end, and exclaiming loudly “He has you on his computer!” And with that Gabriel gave Castiel a smug smile, a clap on the shoulder and whispered “That’s for me being the most awesome brother by not telling mom about this” and left Castiel alone with his embarassment.
When Castiel found the courage to face him, Dean was smiling coyly at Castiel, which only led to him stumbling over his own words, while trying to explain himself.
"He’s my brother. He’s a pathological liar and he thought you were someone else"
Dean’s grin only grew with that, “Oh man, Cas, so you don’t have me on your computer?”
Casually trying to ignore the nickname Dean obviously was trying to maintain after their first talk a few days ago, Castiel flustered “I mean, yeah, I took a photo of the football team and you’re on the football team, so he must have seen… I was touching up stuff” Castiel wondered if he might be able to open a hole in the ground for him to disappear in if he concentrated enough.
"You were touching yourself?" Dean asked. Castiel thought the smile might never leave Dean’s face again and started to not feel like he’s being made fun of, but as if Dean might actually hopefully be flirting with him.
"I was- I was- I’m not gonna answer that" Not that that actually made him act any more suave in this conversation.
"No, but seriously, Cas, what you- what you did for Sammy, I cannot thank you enough, what did you get? Did you get suspended?" Dean suddenly turned serious, sounding guilty and Castiel found that he couldn’t have that, he liked his smile much better.
"It’s truly no big deal. I am glad I was able to help your brother get away from that guy. And no, it’s quite alright, I only got community service, so… don’t worry about it, Dean, I mean it", he gave Dean an encouraging smile to make him see that he doesn’t regret it. When Dean returned it, it gave him a new wave of courage. It wasn't like he had anything left to lose at this point. How hard could it be to ask your crush of 2 years out? "Um so, you wanna, uh, …?"
"Wanna what" Dean’s smile was contagious and Castiel found himself breathless trying to word his thoughts.
"I don’t know, just… I don’t know, we could-" Castiel couldn’t help the laugh that came out of his mouth, because this was getting ridiculous, he couldn’t even form a real sentence anymore, "just- or we could do something else? Or we could-"
He wasn’t sure if Dean was able to read his mind, but he certainly saved him out of his misery by saying “Really? Yeah”
"Yeah?" Did he hear that right? Did Dean actually agree to whatever it was that Cas was trying to ask? Of course, he knew what he wanted, a date, a rendezvous, whatever you wanna call it, but he most certainly didn’t expect Dean to be on board with it. But then Dean added, "Yeah, either one"
"Really?" Just to be sure, because what?!
"Sure" If only Castiel had his camera with him so that he could capture the look on Dean’s face at that moment. The grin turned into a sheepish smile and he saw a blush appear on his favorite freckled face.
His own smile seemed to break his face any minute now, “Alright, good, sounds good!”
"Good"
They just stood there for a while, smiling at each other, lost in their own world, until Castiel reminded himself he needed to go, before he said something else that could ruin this whole thing before it really started.
"But I can’t right now, I- I can’t right now, I’m so busy right now"
"Oh, oh, yeah me, too, ugh." Dean was shuffling his feet, smiling shyly on the ground, not seeming as if he wanted to leave either.
Castiel really didn’t want Dean to get the feeling like he wanted to back out again, so he forced himself to form another sentence “But maybe, uh-“
Dean caught him again stumbling over the words “Maybe some other… you know… time?” Green eyes looked up to him again, sparkling, hopeful; and Castiel who had decided to completely give up on his ability to participate in an actual conversation couldn't do anything but let out another breathless “Yeah”
