☕️ modern day greek myth adaptations
I’m not sure whether this is asking about contemporary authors writing Greek myth adaptations, or about the narrower topic of Greek myth adaptations set in the modern day!
The first is hard to answer, because it can mean so many things; I love adaptations and reception studies, but I am also very critical and picky.
The second is easier: while I have nothing against adaptations set in the modern day in theory, few of them have worked for me.
Mostly I think they tend to run aground on the question of what to do with the gods. I’ve found that things that take the relational bones of a story and then find a meaningful place for it in a different cultural context tend to work better, especially if they find a way to engage respectfully with questions with faith and spirituality in the target culture.
Stories about “the Greek gods living in the modern day!” tend to irritate the hell out of me. I still groan to think about several especially unfortunate examples.
