Is apoquel a safe option for a dog who has multiple lipomas? Mine is on it, as prescribed by my vet, but I recently heard something about a side effect that causes tumors to worsen. Is this something I should be concerned about? Or is this something really rare and the benefit is worth it?
gettingvetted here.
Apoquel is somewhat immunosuppressive and may or may not contribute to allowing certain cancers to grow. However, if the lipomas are benign, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. There are other prescription allergy medications you can try if this possibility is a deal-breaker for you.
me watching Dr. Pimple Popper: ah that seems to be a lipoma
Dr Lee: Looks like a lipoma!
me: yes, a lipoma, my favourite!
Had my private medical appointment earlier, and... developments.
So for one thing, he absolutely does not want me to get the lipoma removed, is dubious that it really is a lipoma rather than just a 'fat hump' as women can get, but it's not a good area to have operated on, and even moreso in my condition.
He looked at my MRI from the summer and spotted this 'bizarre' thing:
On the left we have my C1-C2 vertebrae aligned as they should be on one side of my neck, and on the right we have the other side not being nearly so well aligned. He said it could just be the position I was in, but I'm not sure it was.
My neck was also fucked like the whole time I was there, but I didn't seizure, so I fear his perspective might be tinged by that, given that the only letter he read was from my gp who is actually least involved in this, rather than my or my physio's letters.
In any case, he has three theories:
1. This vertebrae issue. He had me get x-rayed then and there with neck flexion and extension to see what that will show. I'm not sure what the next step will be if that's right (surgery?);
2. If not that, some kind of neuromuscular issue in my neck- he knows a great specialist in that area I could be referred on to through the NHS;
3. If not that, some kind of hypermobility, there's a place in London that deals with that aspect.
So, at least we have a plan of action I guess. And I have to learn to love the lipoma for the time being.
Hi Dr. Ferox! (I promise this is NOT a diagnostic question) So I have a 5 yr old labrador retriever and he has these 2 lumps on his chest area, his vet told me she tested one of them and its just fat, not cancer, nothing to worry about. Which is cool with me, I believe her, but im just so curious as to why/how these fatty lump things happen in dogs? Like why do dogs process fat like that?
Mate, if I could tell you exactly what causes cancer I’d probably be much better paid than I currently am.
And those lumps, if they are lipomas, are neoplasia, they just are usually benign. (but not always)
The same mechanisms that cause cancers cause these benign growths - disordered replication of cells. The cells multiply without restriction - almost. Most lipomas do not grow new blood vessels, so their size is limited by how much oxygen and nutrients they can get. They will be larger on fat dogs than on thin dogs, but all breeds of dogs can get them - even whippets and greyhounds.
Do keep a bit of an eye on them though. While most get no larger than a hen’s egg, some will reach a kilogram or more in weight, and if they’re growing that large you may want them removed, even if they’re benign. There is also a small chance they are malignant or infiltrative, even with a normal biopsy.
Humans can get them too, by the way. So do cockatoos.
Strange fact. Budgies like bacon.
Backstory: Elcid has a lipoma. We’re trying meds first and surgery if that doesn’t help. Elcid's medicine is actually meant for dogs and cats. I was concerned since, as far as I knew, my birds weren't meat-eaters. I mixed it into their food and they started fighting over who got the best seat at the table.
🥓🥓🦜
Anybody else obsssed with Dr. Pimple Popper? I won’t show any, but I live for a cleanly popped out lipoma 😜
Dr. Pimple Popper: I’m pretty sure this is a lipoma
