From The Choirgirl Hotel-the mighty mountain of Tori records, in that it’s definitely a “place,” you really can imagine them all hanging out by the pool, or the bar, or dialing for room service. I remember listening to this record all the way through in Salida after my first girlfriend dumped me via email. The girls swept me away to a safe place of sonic rivers, valleys, moors where I could dig through what happened on my own terms. All of Tori’s songs are like bodyguards, aren’t they? They stand guard while we go through our shit, so that we can just go through it and no one can distract us or make us feel worse. And they’re always evolving along with us and are lifelong friendships. In Pele, we rise from the ashes, and in Choirgirl, we rise from the rushing river and climb from the ravine and there’s beauty in the mirror of loss. She shows us that loss and mourning isn’t just one thing or one emotion, that it’s a moving tapestry like Van Gogh’s sky. The water imagery throughout, from Liquid Diamonds, Pandora’s Aquarium, the Spark video is a part of the tears, disappointment, the waves of feeling and not feeling, and the drowning that often feels inevitable during the deep dive of trauma, gasping for air and grasping for a way forward. Thank you for 25 years of immersion and revelation, here’s to 25+ more and more!!
