In February 1917, Congress passed the Immigration Act, a law that aimed at restricting immigrant entry into America. This marked a turn towards nativism and demonstrated a fractured and anxious perception of what constituted American cultural identity. 100 years later, and we’re still navigating these issues.
On February 23, 2017, at Ace Hotel New York, we’re handing over the mic to the diverse voices of America’s pioneering immigrant population with Unconditional, an immersive sound installation. Speakers around the lobby will broadcast audio clips on loop, creating a unified, impenetrable din of overlapping sounds.
Do you have a sound to share? Audio recordings of street/bird/night sounds from a particularly meaningful place? A soundbite of your nana telling a story about her childhood?
