I read Some Girls Bite by @chloeneill when it first came out and I am forever addicted. This series ranks for me in my top 5 of all time with @kim_harrison_author The Hollows, @mercys.garage Mercy Thompson. I just can’t get enough of the characters and worlds that these amazing #womenauthors create. The first thing that struck me when I began the Queens of Renthia series was the delightful--and blessedly familiar--Hogwarts-esque atmosphere of the Northeast Academy and the relationship amongst the candidates. It was that genuine feel of belonging that just really touched my soul. I really loved the aesthetic of Aratay in particular—a collection of villages nestled in the canopy of an ancient forest, complete with mystical spirits who want nothing more than to murder, but are fascinating nonetheless. It became very apparent as I read that Durst is extremely well-read--in the fantasy genre especially--and it is glaringly clear that her knowledge lends itself so well to this story. I think that is a prime reason I enjoyed these books so very much: she compounds upon quintessential fantasy elements without being derivative. The intricate world building is reminiscent of my other favorites: Tolkien and Lewis and Martin. Idk. Ugh. Only 80 minutes left...How are they gonna wrap this vast and intricate story up?? I am truly at a loss and fully worried... ⚔️👑⚔️ This is it. Tonight is the night. Today is the last day I will spend without knowledge of how #GameofThrones ends, the final episode in the story I have loved more than pretty much anything else. I am SO nervous, especially after the travesty that was season 8, episode 5. I am the daughter of the siren queen.” -#daughterofthesirenqueen 🧜‍♀️👑🏴‍☠️ #LiteraryQOTD - What is a series that captivated you entirely and would not let you do anything else until you finished it from start to finish? 🧜‍♀️👑🏴‍☠️ Pretty sure that pirates and mermaids are the new vampires and werewolves, and I am totally HERE FOR IT. I absolutely devoured this addictive duology. I already have an inclination towards pirates because I am a devout worshipper of the (first 3) Pirates of the Caribbean films. But what made these books so good were their unpredictability; I literally never knew what was coming next and it was so much fun. In a world where female anti-heroes are the center of many modern YA fantasy series, Alosa is fresh and unique and hardcore. The romance is captivating but fully believable—no instalove here. Not usually a fan of drawn out action scenes, I actually found myself looking forward to the sieges and battles and sword fights in these books! The pages just fly by—such a fast-paced narrative. It’s a completely uncomplicated, unassuming, fully engrossing tale and I wish I could just erase my memory and do it all over again. I ended 2018 with these books when a student lent them to me unexpectedly and I decided to give them a go. I am SO happy I did because I discovered the wonderful talent of Tricia Levenseller. “Sometimes, to regain sanity, one had to acknowledge and embrace the madness...” - #FallingKingdoms ⚔️🏰⚔️ ***GOT SPOILER WARNING*** ⚔️🏰⚔️ #LiteraryQOTD - How do you feel about Daenerys snapping into “Mad Queen” mode on the most recent episode of #GOT ? ⚔️🏰⚔️ After GOT episode 8.5, “madness” has dominated much of fans’ conversations and so I wanted to see how my bookstagram fam feels. I have spent literal hours analyzing and tweeting and keyboard warrior-ing, so I’m exhausted tbh, but here’s what I feel, in a nutshell: So, ultimately, the showrunners mean for us to accept that Dany is mad because over the years she’s lost everything and everyone close to her. Many are arguing that the show has been foreshadowing this slip into madness but I cannot believe that for a second. Yes she’s burned people alive; she’s used fire violently and spilled blood. But it was always done for a justified reason, a political show of power, or some other understandable situation. But On Sunday, Dany murdered innocent people, and I’m sorry but there was NO logical build up to her committing such cruelty. I’m just fed up and dissatisfied that one of my favorite book series has come to this. Because then there’s the issue of Sansa, who-according to the writers—only has strength and worth because she was brutally beaten, mistreated, and raped. Then there’s Cersei who got a Romeo and Juliet ending but spent 8 seasons deserving a brutal end.....Please feel free to discuss and argue!
