It didn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that Piper was nervous around her girlfriends. And honestly, how could she not be? Lý was so stunningly handsome, so rugged and gorgeous. That fiery and determination and those muscles made her heart race just from watching her walk by. And then there was Noemi: intelligent, beautiful, passionate in what she did. Hearing her musical laugh made Piper’s leg shake until it was thumping against the ground as if basically begging for an encore. Lý was the brawn, Noemi was the brains. They worked so well together and she adored them both. And it made her so sad to think about sometimes, because what did she bring to the table?
She wasn’t a fighter like Lý, she was a runner. She wasn’t smart like Noemi, all her talents lied in taxidermy or gabbing-- and neither of those things put bread on the table. Sure she was handy, but there wasn’t exactly a shortage of mechanics and for the brief time she’d tried they’d gotten irked by the fact that she couldn’t shut the hell up for five god damn minutes. Sometimes she worried that maybe she was just intruding on an already perfectly good relationship, and it was part of the reason she decided to stick to doing drop-runs; guiding Synths on a safe path back to the Garden. (Well, that, and the fact that her family was still there and relying on her to bring them food and news.) Whenever she came back, she noticed how happy they both always were to see her and she took it as a sign that maybe that nagging voice of doubt in the back of her mind was wrong. But she never managed to cast it away completely.
Until she and Lý finally got a break one warm evening. Noemi was preoccupied with something still and wouldn’t join them until long after the moon had risen. It was just them for the moment. Piper had been going on and on for a good while-- which Lý didn’t seemed to mind. She was never quite as talkative as her girlfriends-- or Piper had never known her to be at least. At some point her rambles took a turn, about how the work hey were doing was really important, about how they were doing good, about how important Lý and Noemi were, about how much she loved them, about how she worried her impact was not as significant, about how she felt like she was intruding on something good, about how she had always felt like she was intruding on people’s lives. The stream seemed almost subconscious, urged on by what she did not know. But it only stopped when Lý put her arm on Pip’s shoulder and squeezed softly, speaking a few powerful words about how she was equally important and how she was no intruder: they loved her, and they wanted her here with them. She drew the runner in close, pulling her into a warm embrace that finally silenced her. Piper hesitated to hug back, feeling tears welling up.
When she finally drew back to speak, Lý cut her off. "Don't talk, just kiss me.”
So she did. She kissed her, and it was warm and fierce and passionate and made her heart feel like it was going to burst in her chest. And despite the tears rolling down her cheeks, Piper smiled into it, finally feeling that anxiety that had plagued her for so long vanish in place a warm comfort in her chest.
For once in her life, she felt loved. And it soothed just as much as it hurt.
