24th June 2016: Brexit, Waterfalls & Icebergs
Well first of all it saddens me to wake up this morning to find out that our nation of morons voted leave, I'm pretty disgusted at the result and slightly ashamed to be British based on the general public being naive. Today the journey starts in Skútustadahreppur and should end somewhere around F208 road in Skaftárhreppur.
Sometimes you got to dice with death and go with your gut... sometimes, in this case we travelled 40km down a gravel road to get to a spot with the impression the fuel range would be fine, the the spot was 70kms, so 140ish there and back, we exited off route one with about 160kms left of fuel “well be fine” i said, this wasn't the case and we had the turn around due to the fuel dropping so quickly. This was a shame but you either turn back or risk being stuck in the middle of know where.
So i quickly checked the map and then next spot to visit was in Fljótsdalshreppur which has a mighty population of 68 and also another sweet waterfall, little did we know it was a 6km hike and back up hill to this one, which excited me due to knowing people are lazy and won't go to the effort to go view it as not on their plate.
From Litlanesfoss waterfall to Jökulsárlon Ice bergs.. a nice costal drive of 267km’s which too around just under 4 hours. Definitely covering some ground now, The eastern region of Iceland doesn't seem to have lots of things to do so why not rack the km’s up.
Costal driving is definitely awesome especially when surrounded by huge cliffs, beams of sun breaking through moody clouds and no one else on the roads.A quick summary would be travelled through lava fields, luscious greenery and then a desert, I now see why Nath didn't believe me when i said the next spot was Ice bergs.
We finally arrived and was cold and super windy, the view was incredible. I for one haven't seen such mammoth pieces of ice floating in the water, it was a surreal feeling as if i was in the Antarctic or something. But again tourist heaven so we didn't hang around for too long mainly due to be super windy.
When travelling and camping wild you naturally become anxious not knowing where you will be staying, something that looms over me every evening if we are still on the road past 20:00, this continued to loom over me for many hours up until around 23:00 when the weather on a F208 road was so bad i couldn't see 10metres ahead and also being a river crossing.
So its a night in the truck for us..
