Use of “mommy” once | TW DEATH OF MINOR CHARACTERS

Once upon a time there lived a young and kind child Prince. Often he would go out, avoiding his lessons in the garden. He’d run through the rows and rows of colorful hydrangeas, roses and orchids, through the thick of the woods to a quaint, little pond hidden just a short scuttle from the castle. There were many peaceful creatures that lived in and around the lively pond. There were koi fish of orange and white-“
From the antsy wiggling and wriggling of the tuft of blue snuggled up beside you, you could tell your little one was eager to say what was on his mind.
“Yes, Hao?”, you couldn’t help but giggle, as always, he was right on time.
“And frogs??”, Minghao looked up at you with big, beaming, boba eyes, hugging his giant froggy plush tight to his chest in anticipation of your answer. Anyone would have thought he’d never heard this tale before.
“I’m getting there.”, chuckling at the way he nodded, itching to hear more, you resumed your story.
“-and dragon flies, and water beetles-“
Nearly bouncing in his spot, his eyes twinkled as he kicked his feet ever so slightly with the utmost impatience.
“AND FROGS!”, he exclaimed, unable to hold it in any longer.
“Yes, Hao. And Frogs.”, shaking your head, you grinned at how excited he’d gotten. Hao usually wasn’t so impatient, but this was his favorite story; a story that Mommy thought up, just for him.
“The Prince would come as often as he could, counting each and every creature he could see until one day he curiously counted a new creature; a little freckled girl in worn clothes and messy, wild hair.
‘Are you from the village?’, he asked, but the girl was too shy to answer and simply watched along with him as the frogs swam around in the shallows.
As many moons passed, the girl became more comfortable by his side. They became playmates; chasing one another, prancing and splashing in the waters enough to earn a scolding from the King and Queen when the boy returned with soaked trousers. But sometimes, most times, they’d just sit on their rock and watch that lively pond until the sun set low in the sky, turning everything a beautiful shade of orange, calling the both of them home for the evening.
One day, the king and queen became strict, with word of a deadly sickness plaguing the village, no one was allowed in or out of the castle for many moons, including the prince.”
Minghao frowned, fully immersed in the tale of the prince and the village girl, he knew what was coming.
“When the boy finally made it to the pond he was nearly half a year older. The pond was the same. Same koi, same dragon flies, water Beatles, new tadpoles-“
“Frogs…” Minghao whispered so softly, small and hushed with wide eyes, hugging his dear Mr.Froggy closely.
“But along with the same old frogs of different shades of green, a new frog was spotted on their rock. After just a glance the pale, freckled frog hopped off and disappeared into the waters.
Thinking nothing of it, the boy sat and waited. Many more moons passed, the boy only being greeted by the new, freckled frog.
The Prince had overheard many people in the village had not survived the plague and after a while the boy began to lose hope. He became sad and lonely, only accompanied by the pale, freckled frog who would get closer and closer each day.
‘You’re quite a likeness, stupid frog.’
But the boy truly wished to be a happy and contented frog himself, sad and lonely without the presence of his dearest friend, and a chance that she may no longer be living.
The boy stayed with the frog, watching it live so peacefully, as his friend did in life. Saying goodbye to his parents the boy decided.
Like every other day, he greeted his friend, the pale and freckled frog and swam away with it into the pond returning as a beautiful green frog himself…”
He smiled for a moment in silence, laying his head down on your chest and basking in your affection as your hand met his hair, placing gentle, soothing strokes, over and over.
Admiring his obliviousness and his empathy, you could tell he understood the sad undertone but also how he saw the happiness of it. They got to be frogs together and that’s all that mattered.
“Do you think I could be a frog one day too, mommy?, he asked, snuggling further into your embrace with a yawn.
“I think you’re my little frog right now.”
“I’m not a frog, silly mommy!!”, he giggled and rolled around in his spot.
“Oh really? You’re not a frog?? You don’t have cute little frog legs?? Then why. Do. I. Wanna eat them!!! Numnumnumnum!”, tickling his sides, you leaned in to nibble on his cheek as he squealed trying, though not very hard, to get away from you.
It wasn’t long before he dozed away in your arms, Mr.Froggy squished between the two of you and a small string of drool forming at the corner of his mouth. Closing his mouth, you put aside his plushie, turn off the lights and let your eyes close, the last thing in your sights being the soft-green, glowing, froggy nightlight in the far corner of the room.
