Fully plant based shampoo
I have been making my own fully plant based shampoo for the past month and using it too. The recipe is no secret although it is a lost gem of knowledge. When I first learned about it, it took a while to go and find the right mix of ingredients. While making it, I was sceptical: It will be one of those “herbal” things that sound good but won’t do the job even if they keep my hair chemical free.
What to expect and not
Making it can take anything between 40 minutes to 1 hour, with a process requiring overnight soaking of ingredients. During the wash it may seem like a rinse from water because it does not lather, but you can actually feel that your hair has been cleaned. After drying, expect your hair to look as good as it would with “normal” factory made shampoo (proof in pictures). I played around a little with my next batch of ingredients and it got better suited to my hair. A total of 300 grams can give me 7-8 times of use for 3 weeks. It is reasonable to spend a few hours, once in every 3-4 weekends making this treat for your hair. The ingredients are cheap and can be bought loose, packet-free in the markets.
Food for hair
I am so happy with the results that I don’t want to switch back. I know what I am feeding my hair. I love getting my hands dirty and feel eager for every first wash to see how the shampoo has turned out. Overall, I am experiencing less hairfall and after the longest time, I see new, little baby hair growing back!
Care for planet
It is satisfying to know I have put zero chemicals in my hair. Such a shame what nicely packaged products can convince us into buying. After using my ‘food for hair’ shampoo all beauty and body “care” products seem like an obvious scam. I also realized that something that is bad for you will definitely be bad for the planet and unsustainably sourced. We don’t need to go into figures to figure out the damage factory made products cause. Carbon emissions from the processing, to extraction of resources, to chemical wastes in the oceans to packaging. If I can make my own shampoo WHY would I not!
Workshop
I thought if I did a workshop where people actually came and learned things first hand, took back material home to make it, they’ll definitely make a switch too. I hope that those who do make it to the workshop will be inspired to go back and share it with friends and family perhaps through their own workshops. This surely requires time and priorities to show a little care towards yourself and slowly, but surely for the planet!
