self-flagellating cruelty

I am quite cruel to myself. so much so that I believe I deserve death for the slightest misstep. but the truth is, I desire gentleness. I desire an honest, lovely, self-fulfilling gentleness. I like the harshness of brutality but not as much as I like the care of gentleness. The truth is, I am too harsh on myself so I need you to be gentle with me. I am unable to inflict the same gentleness upon myself, so I ask kindly for you to do it for me. Please give me a hug, tell me you love me, make me a cup of tea and tell me I'll be okay. Most of all, please do not question my capacity for cruelty. self-flagellating cruelty. The answer will be far too sad for you to stomach. Please trust me. Nothing is worse than my darkness infecting someone else--I'm not trying to block you out. I'm trying to protect you. I promise.

Tonight we got to go see @jennyslate at the @neptunetheatre and it was so worth it. Not only is she a hilarious comedian, but she’s also such a kind and authentic human being with some amazing insights. I’m only about halfway though her book #littleweirds but so far it reads like observational poetry that tackles some big concepts through the lens of everyday stories. One thing that she mentioned during the show that really got me thinking was tied to the idea of “editing down your personality to nothing”. It made me think a lot about my version of self and the many faces I present to the world. Sometimes I do feel like I edit myself down to come across as more articulate or to seem less ‘messy’. Her comments made me really cognizant about my own identity and how I want to show up. I’m still not sure how I feel about it or what it all means for me but I definitely want to take the time to marinate in these juicy thoughts. Bottom line, if she’s coming to a city near you, I highly recommend seeing the show, and if she’s not, I recommend you peep her new book, ‘little weirds’.
