Jolts up wait. Link Click mother thesis is that mother loves you so much but cannot meaningfully protect you from anything.
Its so omnipresent in the narrative. Cheng Xiaoshi and Shao Yuanyuan, Chen Xiao and his mother, Emma and her mother, Doudou and his mother, the twins and Liu Lan. Mom loves you. Mom is ill tempered or faceless or too passive but she loves you. But she can't really protect you at all. Shao Yuanyuan, we don't know much about her, but we know she loves Cheng Xiaoshi and yet in her quest to save her husband her son is dying and we don't even know if she knows. She loves her son but she left him too and he grew up with only Qiao Ling and a belief that never came true that his parents would come back for him. Chen Xiao's mother loved him to a point she sacrificed her life for him but she couldn't protect him from losing everyone else he cared about, from every regret in his life. Doudou's mother loved him to a point she broke after he was kidnapped and yet was unable to keep him safe right in front of her. Emma's mother is the one constantly reaching out to her and worrying about her despite her father's dismissal and yet she couldn't protect her daughter from the predatory workplace she wound up in and couldn't save her from dying. And Liu Lan? Hugest example of this. Every step she takes to save the twins from Li Fan is the wrong one, everything she tries fails until she bleeds out in their arms and it saves nothing, Tianchen continues his father's violence and anger and Tianxi is never given agency in anything until her dead. Mom loves you so much. Mom can never protect you.
And Dad? Who is Dad but the perpetrator. But the one she fails to protect you from. But the one who doesn't love until its too late. But the one who leaves you first, but the one who might have cared and loved you too but didn't understand what you needed. Mom is trying and Mom can never protect you. Is Dad even trying at all?
It's just. The way gender is so central to Link Click - the eternal link between masculinity and agency, femineity and the lack of it - it's insane. It's all insane. I'm going insane. Mom loves you and can never protect you but god didn't she try and was it enough?
So much emotions when I see each of these images😭😭😭.
li twins week day 7 free day, i had already drawn the first one for the last day but really wanted to include liu lan in my li twins week drawings so made a extra doodle for that. @litwinsweek
Rewatching Link Click is fun because there's so many good character hints that something is seriously off with the Li family dynamic, even before Li Fan returns home.
Liu Lan reacting to her mute daughter apparently speaking, not with hope or excitement but with desperation, begging her to say something else. <- It makes me think when Li Tianxi stopped speaking abruptly one day, that Liu Lan almost certainly got blamed for it. As a side note, look at how unhealthily pale and ashen her skin is in comparison to the twins. She's running herself ragged trying to keep everything together.
Tianxi watching her mother struggle with the bags and taking one of them from her, even when she tries to assure her that she can do it. <- It is painful in hindsight to see Tianxi trying her best to ease tensions and be helpful, while unfortunately also being the instigator for so much of it through no real fault of her own. I do think that's why, after this day, she seems to have mostly stopped trying in favour of staying "asleep".
Tianchen yelling for their neighbour not to touch his sister, clearly having raced over to intervene. <- From his perspective, no one is coming to save them, the world is inherently untrustworthy, and he's the only one who will step in. Everyone seems to act like nothing is wrong - he already feels isolated within his own family. But he's scared too. I know it's probably just the exertion of having run over, but he looks like he's shaking a little. His fear for his sister masquerades as anger.
Did I say rewatching was fun? I meant painful.
was rewatching season 2 and
you think cxs briefly thought back to when his mom was still around in this scene?
maybe to a memory of his own. for a moment, he must’ve surely made the connection, even if it was a fleeting thought— and that’s why he’s looking at liu lan like that
happy birthday ltx and ltc !!
I don't blame the twins, but man, imagine how guilty they must feel when they look back on what they did as children and realize how they were contributing to the problem. It's not their fault, of course, but if Xiao Xi hadn't overheard, then maybe Liu Lan could've pushed for divorce. If Tianchen hadn't hung up that call, then maybe Liu Lan could've gotten the help she needed. And if Tianchen hadn't recklessly possessed Liu Lan to fight back, maybe she could still be alive now...
