Qiao ling woke up, expecting to spend her birthday as she always had. A morning surprise with her parents (that aren’t as surprising as they were when she was a kid but endearing nonetheless) , a lunch with Xu Shanshan and Dong Yi (after which they would go shopping together ) and then later, joined by Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu guang for her birthday party and dinner. All in all, a day well spent.

Which is why it takes her a second to process the text she gets around breakfast time.

“Qiao ling-jie, Could you drop by the studio before lunch?”

Lu guang’s text is straight forward and has no context. Although, it is her birthday. Maybe the boys decided they wanted to pay her rent a bit sooner.

The thought makes her smirk a bit and she’s off, to her second home,the time photo studio.

She ends up finding out later that night, why there had been a slight change of plans. They probably had Xu Shanshan and Dong Yi get the change of clothes for her while she was kept busy at the studio.

Still, she can’t quite stop the smile tugging at her lips as she watches them set the scene.

The boys have gotten together to give her the photoshoot of her dreams. Where they found this abandoned street filled with graffiti she’ll never know. But seeing their excited faces when they offered this week long modeling experience as a birthday present.

Well. How could she say no?

Ok but imagine being Dong Yi for a second. You give an appointment to your crush to basically confess/confirm your feelings for eachother right before your first job interview, for which you're undoubtedly already really stressed, and she doesn't show up, and you think you've been stood up but then it turns out that your crush had been kidnapped by a fucking serial killer who didn't even have anything to do with either of you. Like, what are the chances

See You at Work Tomorrow! (ep4) I’m now caught on up on this low-key romcom. Seo In Guk likes to choose dramas that explore philosophical questions about life and humanity as a whole. In an early discussion between our leads, our FL blurs the lines by switching between talking about work and dating. Our ML tries to clarify which one she’s talking about, she exclaims, “Both!” because work and dating feel the same and have similar stages. These blurred lines between work and dating are continually prodded, bent, and broken by our leads. Where does one end and the other begin? They are constantly questioning themselves and each other about this boundary. It is a source of frustration, curiosity, insight, and comfort. They are working through clarifying their personal relationship in the same way they are working through how to clarify the literal round (aka circumspect) ball of ice they are creating professionally so they can see things clearly. 

On a secondary note, our FL Park Ji Hyun is playing a very different character from her usual, self-absorbed antagonist that we love to hate (or at least be annoyed by). But the change was more than that she’s playing a typical romantic lead. Everything from her expressions, to her hair (bangs and a long bob), and her wardrobe styling was reminding me of someone. Then it hit me: Kim Da Mi. Everything about it is screaming Kim Da Mi. Is it just me?

The First Jasmine (ep38) Action, mystery, and romance are the veneer in which this drama presents its calculating philosophical treatise on life and power. We’re now in the final chess match. The players are set. The scale of gains and losses is being evaluated by history. And our leads are two sides of the same coin working to bring it all together. 

Dong Yi (ep21) The naiveté of Dong Yi is starting to be broken down by the betrayal of a mentor. She also showed true grit standing up to her opponent in a way that signaled the clever and powerful leader she can become. The villains showed too much mustache-twirling evil simplicity for my taste in these last few episodes but hopefully that is just temporary. 

Search: WWW (ep9) I watched the first half in January and liked it, but just got busy with all the new airing shows. It’s still interesting and different after picking it back up.

I know we said we wanted to celebrate graduation, but we could’ve just done karaoke or something.” Qiao Ling takes a slow sip of her slushie. Xu Shanshan makes a good point—the five of them get along pretty well, but whenever they’re in close quarters for an extended period of time, it’s a guarantee that arguments will break out. They could’ve made their celebration something simple that didn’t run the risk of ruining their friendship forever by forcing them all into one vehicle for hours on end. But… There’s something freeing about road trips. And when they’re about to be forced into reality full-time now that their university days have come to a close… What better way to celebrate than an escape from the real world?
