Anytime I did well growing up, my mom wasn’t there.

Liz threw a stack of paper on the workbench in front of Michael.

Michael removed his goggles and squinted at it. It was about ten pages of yellow lined paper, hand-written, stapled together. It looked like trash. Then he peered closer. “Is that my…”

“I can’t believe you wrote that in twelfth grade!” she accused. “No wonder you almost beat me for valedictorian.”

Michael huffed, and then laughed outright. “I’d’ve had you, you know.”

“Good thing we’ll never know," Liz said shortly, almost like she really was worried.
