Democracy after Virtue by Sungman Kim

Pragmatic Confucian Democracy

1. Democracy is good in itself --> (as an end in itself) good to structure social life

2. Democracy is good in itself --> (as a means to an end) for democracy-related goals like governance

3. Democracy is good, among alternative systems --> (as a means to an end) compared to others, it is a good system to achieve goals

4. Democracy is good to achieve non-democracy-related goals --> (as a means to an end) e.g. economic growth

5. Democracy is bad in itself --> majority-based system cannot achieve goals

Confucianism vs Democracy --> Quite different ideologies:

Order vs Chaos

Hierarchy vs Equality

Prof Kim considered how people within countries like Korea, Taiwan and Japan have different notions of Confucian values e.g. 孝, 仁, and gender equality. Democracy becomes a means for citizens in each country to come to a consensus on what these Confucian values mean to society.

Here’s the skinny.

I’ll be moving to the city of lions for two years starting July 28th, 2017. As a graduate student at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Living smack in the middle of the botanic gardens.

Yet, this quote rings in my ears. :) 

It was funny a friend of mine (from Pakistan) put it that way. But, yes, it was a challenging September when most of us had to submit more than 5,000 words. We're doing only 4 courses within the first semester: (1) Economics Foundation, (2) Policy Process and Institutions (3) Policy Challenges (4) one elective course which is in my case "Media, Public Policy, Public Opinion."  The 2016 Master's class started in early August, and while I'm writing this post, my classmates (about 80 of us) will see new professors (yes there are about two professors for every subject) from tomorrow onwards. 

We'll be provided a clicker each tomorrow. What does it do? I guess, it'll help us answer before others :P, and your answer will be counted as a point/score during the course. Oh My Lord. How am I going to survive this major heart attack during the sessions? 

Actually, I've enjoyed most of the classes, but what interests me the most is (1) using media as an agenda setting to frame or prime messages and create public opinion (2) understanding the policy challenges in countries like Myanmar or the countries from the third wave of democratization (3) how the world words from the lens of an economist. :)

We did a presentation today on our consulting exercise in Change Agents class. We aim both to deliver Gawad Kalinga a roadmap for future expansions abroad as well as assist in prototyping - help build first sustainable village in Vietnam.

Kept the slides brief, and Corey did a nice job supplementing them with personal stories on GK and Tony Meloto.
