This book 14 is so far one of the best books since the 9th volume. It has gossip, fights, comedy, drama, disaster, ALL THAT IN ONE SINGLE REUNION!! And I'm still at 33%

And Maamei? What an actress! That part Maomao says her husband reminds her of Gaoshun, I'm sure Freud is blowing kisses for Miss Hyūga from afterlife.

The number of characters I don’t trust has been increasing in the apothecary diaries light novels. First Tianyu, then Hulan, and now Ujun. I'm also worried about Zulin's sister punishment and how that's gonna affect the way Zulin and Chou-u see Maomao.

That makes me feel uneasy, but it's good. It's amazing for a story to have morally grey characters, we never know what they would do, who they could harm, or how important they could be in order to save someone's skin.

But I have one thing to complain: can't believe I won't have the books to read everyday anymore! Can't wait for the next two volumes!! 😭😭😭

Also, one more thing, it's sad (?), scary (?) (I don't know how to describe the feeling not even in my own language) to see how slowly the red district and the Verdigris it's becoming less and less Maomao's home and the palace and even the La Family's house it's becoming her new home.

It's one of those situations in life that keeps changing little by little until one day you look back and your old place is not there anymore, the people are different and even if you wanted to go back home, home is somewhere else now, and that place is not physical anymore, but just a memory.

Who really is Suiren?

LN14 SPOILERS

I have a theory that Suiren is part of the Mi clan.

It’s pointed out so often how sharp she is. Maomao, Taomei, Maamei and Chue, all highly intelligent and strong ladies, are scared of her. Jinshi says at some point that not even Maomao can get the best of her. She even discovered that Maomao’s ticklish.

It’s just so convenient that she entered the Rear Palace just when a scared 10 years old Anshi was hiding her pregnancy and she was the one who discovered it and started protecting her and the baby from assassins.

When Maomao hears about it for the first time she thinks it’s fiction, showings how unbelievable it sounds.

We know the Mi clan are people trained to serve and protect the Imperial family. I think it’s safe to assume that the Empress Regnant wanted to make sure her son had at least one heir. Maybe she suspected Anshi was pregnant or hoped that some of the girls were so she sent Suiren to check and protect any girl who was expecting. And Suiren found Anshi.

Suiren just had Ah duo so she was perfect for the job. She could bond with Anshi and be her child’s wet nurse. She would be close enough to the baby to protect him.

Funnily enough, right before Maomao hears about this “legendary lady-in-waiting” she is told about how consorts were using ladies-in-waiting as spies.

Damn, the Epilogue was so good. I should’ve seen it coming because Ujun has that Hulan energy, no wonder Chue wants to make him a spy.

There’s a lot that can be said about this volume, but one thing that I find interesting is the mention of this one character: Grand General Lu.

We first learn about him in Vol 8 when Jinshi wants to expend the military and needs the approval of one of the two people who stands at the top of the military hierarchy: Lakan and Grand Marshal Lu.

He started his career as a soldier whose job was to protect a then ten year old Anshi. He won her trust and with her and the Empress Regnant’s help he rose quickly through the ranks and became Marshal. It’s said that Anshi wields substantial influence with him.

In Vol 14, we find out he got promoted to General the same time Gyokuyou’s family became a named clan to maintain a balance between the factions.

In other words, he’s a “bigwig” and I think he’ll be a relevant character later in the story.
