Sunday Funday
The lingering Indian Summer sun was beating down on Washington, DC. The week after Labor Day had been a blur, as most short weeks in DC ended up being. Government holidays, and especially ones marking the beginning or end of summer, typically shut down the city at large leaving morning and evening commutes slightly more bearable for a few days. Once the weekend had rolled around again, it was as if the summer had been one long holiday and the onset of fall was already very much in the air. "The rest of the beach trip served its purpose.Nick, Richie and I even opted to stay an extra day to avoid the holiday traffic. We partook in the Rehoboth nightlife enough to even make them miss the day to day scuffle of the city once again. All in all, it was a phenomenal trip." Sky explained over his home fries. The roof deck of Local 16 was bustling with people at the height of brunch time on Sunday afternoon and reuniting with friends after a long absence almost felt like coming back to school again, except with mimosas and Bloody Mary's. Victor, Sky and Nick had agreed to meet up with Monty for brunch. Over the course of their week apart, he had become smitten with a new man. "It definitely did me a world of good to be rid of you for a few days also. Tom and I alternated spending the night together between his place and ours. One day, we only got out of bed to walk the dogs," Victor said smugly. "Aw, that's so sweet. I'm getting cavities," Nick interjected, taking a sip of his mimosa. "Have you talked to Jesse at all since you've been back?" Victor asked bluntly. "Not yet. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to approach him now. I kind of left it open ended," Nick replied. "Well, he was still out in full force last weekend. We went out almost every night, Nellie's, JR's, Town, you name it," Monty told them. "I think he's trying to prove a point that he isn't fazed by what happened." "I call bullshit on that. We all know he feels awful for what happened. And I want you two to sort things out, because I cannot continue to be this selective over who I brunch with for much longer," Victor said. "I'll get around to it later this week. It's not fair to put you guys in the middle of all this." Nick pushed around his food on his plate. "So I guess you all know why I asked you here today," Monty said. "Yes! You have a new beau. Tell us all about him," Sky said. "Well, he's a hotel concierge at the Washington Plaza. Really nice, really generous, really hot. I asked you guys to meet me here because he just moved into a condo building across from Meridian Hill Park and I spent the night there last night," Monty explained. "You? Spent the night with someone! I am stunned at the notion," Victor rolled his eyes, taking a sip of his mimosa. "Ha ha ha, very funny," Monty conceded. "Is that why you asked me to bring a shirt for you to change into?" Sky asked. Monty nodded with a smirk. "Well, are you going to tell them or shall I?" Victor asked. "Tell us what?" Nick inquired eagerly. "I woke up on a roof last week." Monty revealed. "What?! How?" Sky asked. "I don't remember. All I remember is being at JR's for trivia and the next thing I knew, I was on my back staring at the night sky with a dick in my mouth," Monty explained. "To clarify, this is the same guy he spent the night with last night," Victor interjected. "We woke up together and I had no idea what the hell happened. No clue how we got up there. It was roof deck behind Agora, next door to JR's," Monty clarified. "Well, that will be an interesting story for your memoir, whether you end up with the guy or not," Sky pointed out. "I really like him, regardless of our hazy first encounter," Monty said, "His name is Eli. Eli Wallace." "So, does that mean the two of us have men in our lives at the same time." Victor looked to Monty. "Cheers, bitch!" Monty clinked glasses with Victor. "Great, you all get boyfriends and I get a questionable HIV status," Nick said bitterly, downing the rest of his mimosa.
EVERY WEEK AT LOCAL 16
Does it Have a Roof?
Anyone whos lived in DC for any significant period of time should know that there are few things better than a rooftop bar or restaurant when it’s nice out. DC rooftops are awesome for a number of reasons: 1) they can be open for a significant portion of the year (unlike Boston’s)
2) many of them have heaters, really, really good heaters
3) they aren’t THAT high above the ground, so they aren’t scary
4) there are a lot of them
5) you get to be outside
Need I say more? On days like today, when anyone suggests a happy hour, restraurant, or bar, I find myself asking “ok, but does it have a roof?” I will also never understand the people who stay inside when they have the option of sitting or standing outside at a bar or restaurant on a nice day. Some places with great roofs: Local 16 for a casual neighborhood feel, El Centro for margaritas and mojitos (although, be warned, they don’t serve much food up there), Surfside for tacos and more margaritas, Marvin, Perry’s for a delicious meal and great date, and P.O.V. at the W for an incredible view but expensive drinks and a “scene.” I, for one, plan on spending a significant portion of my weekend relaxing on the roof of my own building. What are your favorite rooftops in the city?
