Local Cryptid AU!

Tom and Maddie got lucky that the aliens they found were so cute. In this AU mobians look a lot freakier than they do in cannon.

Not too much changes plot wise between the movies and this AU. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckes still all come to Earth, they just stand out a little bit more. Sonic’s reputation as the Blue Devil and Green Hill’s local cryptid doesn’t go away and he fully embraces it. Tom and Maddie were freaked out by him at first but quickly got over it and just fully adopt their town's local urban legend/ alien kid boogeyman.

[Mostly just an excuse to play around with the fact that the characters are aliens and Sonic was a local/urban legend for 10 years.]

I'm still working on designs for the rest of the cast but they'll be up shortly! I have a lot of ideas for stuff I want to do/make for this AU!

remy's coffee shop is called Fluidi-Tea because they're gender fluid and it's the subtle enough for a shop that opened in 1990. they've had a rainbow flag in the shop since the beginning, and then added to the collection as more flags got widely accepted (bi flag: unveiled 1998, trans flag: first shown 2000)

they keep the shop open from like noon to 3am because their shop was always meant as a safe space. then as they hired more people, the shop started opening in the morning. remy was like the only one working there for a good while tho. they had like one employee by the time they got dee and had to hire more people. they definitely brought dee to work, mostly for like 10pm-3am shifts. so dee has spent lots of nights in the coffee shop before he started school and a sleep schedule became important.

remy and virgil met because virgil walked into the coffee shop one night, went straight to the counter to order, then took one look at remy and proposed. they had never met before. remy said yes and gave him a black coffee on the house.

virgil came back the next night with a ring and asked when remy wanted to get married.

it's 1991 so they could have registered for a domestic partnership, but nah, remy has two IDs (one says they're male, the other says they're female, their family helped getting them, don't ask), so they got a marriage license and then found a priest to perform the wedding. totally legal. remy wore a dress.

In this AU Sonic is basically the ugly duckling. He’s never seen another hedgehog from his home planet and has no idea what they’re supposed to look like. His only frame of reference for sentient beings are Longclaw and humans. Neither of which he looks like.

As he grows up on Earth he realizes that he looks more like the monsters that he sees on TV than the people who own the windows he watches it through. The only person who knows about his existence calls him a devil. He lives feral in the woods in a cave with no one to talk to. Between all of that, Sonic develops horrible self esteem and a fear that people will be scared of him.

Needless to say, when Tom sees him he freaks out. Sonic isn’t surprised by his reaction and understands it, but it still doesn’t feel great to have your hero scream in horror the second he looks at you. The above comic is supposed to take place during the motel scene in the first movie where Tom is apologizing for his reaction.

Don’t worry though, Tom and Maddie adopt him and help him feel more confident and comfortable being himself.

POV your town's little league baseball team has some weird players this season

More local cryptids AU! After moving in with Tom and Maddie Sonic finally gets to join the baseball team instead of just watching. Who cares if he’s been the town’s boogeyman for the past decade, he’s got a hell of a fast ball!

I also tried making a speedpaint for the first time while working on this piece!

More Local Cryptids AU!

Here's my design for Knuckles in it! He looks pretty similar to cannon tbh. His quills are a lot larger and I imagine that he is able to shoot some of the ones on his tail at enemies if he needs to. Some of his longer quills carry a venom as well. Even though he’s a walking venomous pincushion he still enjoys physical contact like hugs with his family. His family just has to figure out how to strategically dodge quills and spikes first.

Because he is a more recent arrival on Earth, he doesn’t have Sonic’s built up reputation as an urban legend. After fighting Robotnik’s mech in the second movie, videos of Knuckles and all three of them end up online. By then, their existence is an open “secret”. G.U.N. Doesn’t officially admit to the world that they’re there, but Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are not exactly hiding. So, on a technicality, Knuckles and Tails get to call themselves cryptids but aren’t stuck living alone in the woods for a decade. However, the “Reno Sightings” are still hotly debated in some online circles…

More Local Cryptids AU!

Finished up my design for Tails! Just like in canon, the only difference between him and other foxes is his extra tail. Tom is of the opinion that Tails is "so creepy it’s cute" and Maddie likes to think he's more "scrungly". He has hooves and does wear shoes sometimes, but it takes him a while to find a pair that works for him. His antlers are pretty small but he is convinced that they'll get larger when he's older.

Like Knuckles, Tails is a more recent arrival on Earth and doesn't really have the same urban legend surrounding him as Sonic. Mostly because by the time that Tails and Knuckles show up, the citizens of Green Hills are already cool with aliens existing and running around their town. Back on Mobius however, Tails' village didn't just think he's weird, they thought of him more as a monster living in the woods so he's not stranger to being a cryptid.

Basic AU premise is that mobians look a lot weirder and during his time on Earth Sonic has built up more of a reputation as a local cryptid/urban legend
