Mayor Andy Burnham warns that dramatically shifting pictures of infection rates will continue to force local lockdowns
“ The truth is, in the areas under restrictions, there are large numbers of people in low-paid, insecure jobs who cannot self-isolate if asked to do so by the test-and-trace system. They know they won’t be paid if they do or, worse, could lose their jobs. This helps explain why there is a low contact with test and trace in poorer areas and why people are reluctant to provide names of contacts to tracers.”
“We urgently need a simple national policy which allows all workers to isolate on full pay if asked to do so. How that is paid for is a matter for government to sort with employers. As it stands, the lack of such a policy is a major chink in our armour against Covid-19 and leaves our poorest communities dangerously exposed.”
Nothing about this is rocket science. If the government wants the current plan to work, people MUST be able to self isolate on full pay, without fear of losing their jobs. That is the bottom line.
It’s starting to feel like March all over again, except solidarity has given way to confusion and resentment, says Christine Berry
Professor Susan Michie called for financial support and accommodation for quarantine and self-isolation as part of a drive to eliminate coro

Community leaders have expressed fears that there will be a backlash towards British Asians over the Covid-19 spread following a rise in cases.
Community leaders fear that British Asians will be subjected to backlash despite their efforts being made to control the virus.
This comes after Bradford and other towns in the north of England tightened lockdown restrictions following an increase in Covid-19 cases.
Recent outbreaks have been peaking among Asians, often living in the most deprived areas of terraced streets.
In one incident, an Asian man was called a “disease spreading P***” while out shopping.
South Asians often have multi-generational families living together. Many are also in public-facing jobs.

It would help if Tory MPs refrained from using racist dog whistles to blame the BAME community for local lockdowns due to covid-19.
As Number of Coronavirus Cases Rises, India Resorts to Local Lockdowns
As the number of coronavirus cases rises, countries around the world - including India - are resorting to "local lockdowns" to curb the spread of infections.
As the name suggests, “localised” or “local” lockdowns involve imposing restrictions on movement and business activity on a particular region, town or city that has a cluster or outbreak of cases.
In order to avoid these cases being transmitted far and wide, the cluster is cut off from the outside world until the number of cases comes down and the outbreak is controlled.
Localised lockdowns are no doubt not as destructive as their nationwide counterparts. But that doesn’t mean they are painless. If one city is put under lockdown for a weekend or a week, it would invariably have serious repercussions for manufacturing and supply chains.
