うらくろ通りに打ち水をした軒先があった。 「どうぞ、いらっしゃい」と開いた店内から声がした。店主の堤泰二さん（64歳）が週に一度だけオープンする、『気まぐれカフェ』。 二間続きの座敷、奥に趣のある中庭。土間には看板犬のロクがかつてない暑さにうなだれていた。店内は何処もが古さと懐かしさがぎゅっと詰まった佇まいだ。

昔は蝋燭屋、その後祖父の代に新聞屋へ変わった。『近江毎夕新聞』という地元密着の新聞を発行していたが後に廃業し、商業施設の煽りを受け商店街の客足も遠退いた。 寂しくなる通りを活気付けたい思いで、奥様の伸江さんとカフェを開店した。 　泰二さんが豆を挽き、香り漂う傍には伸江さん手作りのお砂糖をまぶしたドーナツが置いてある。 「子どもが小さいときから食べていた卯の花のドーナツです」と微笑む。卯の花は近くお豆腐屋さん、一富士のもの。一口いただくと優しい味がした。 　泰二さんの背後には多くの書籍が並び、そこにはライカのカメラ。一瞬、新聞社さんだったことを思い出させられた。 穏やかな空気感とお二人の人柄に魅せられた時間だった。 また私ものんびりしたい気分になったら、ご夫婦とロクに会いにお邪魔しようと思う。

インタビュー／さざなみ古書店　中村恭子さん

「これからは、おかあさんが幸せになるのが見てみたい」

還暦を迎えたタイミングで娘に言われた言葉をきっかけに、ちいさな町で古書店を開きたいという夢を叶えた中村恭子さん。 福岡の実家で家事や介護を経て、以前から一度泊まってみたかった滋賀県長浜市にある季の雲のホテルに１泊。水路が巡る城下町の古い町並みを散歩していくうちに、すっかり長浜のことが気に入り、2011年に『さざなみ古書店』をはじめた。 丸くて大きな図工机にやさしい光が入るさざなみ古書店には、恭子さんが集めた本と、地元の方が持ってきた本が、ジャンルごとにきちんと本棚に置かれていた。 「目標は、椎名誠さんが書いた『さらば国分寺書店のオババ』のような、恐いけどかっこいいオババになること」と明るく話す恭子さんのお店には、今日も本とおしゃべり好きな常連客が訪れていた。 お店を始めてから7年半。神戸に住む娘さんも、長浜が大好きで休みの度にお店に遊びに来ているそう。

『娘たちに幸せな姿をみてもらわないとね』と笑って語ってくれた。
