LOCATION LORE: NIGHTMARE ISLAND
Unlike Dream Island, which was a cheaply-constructed artificial island doomed to sink into the sea whether it was stolen or not, Nightmare Island is a natural landform.
[Yes I have to update the maps I made a little lol]
Now, as for why the island is…like that, well, Nightmare Island got the Bikini Atoll treatment during the Great Yoyle War…except more weapons than just nuclear ones were tested on it.
why Announcer decided to offer it as a competition prize is anyone’s guess. The best explanation is that Announcer is an idiot.
Chase, Nevada
Small town off route 375 in Nevada, right by Groome Road, which leads directly to the East Gate of Nellis Test & Training Range - Area 51
Situated between Rachel & Crystal Springs - closer to Crystal Springs
Ex-trading post turned ranch land
Population is less than 1500 people
Other than ranching, Chase’s biggest economical pull is alien tourism, due to proximity to Area 51
Most residents either live in single-floor, suburb-type houses or trailers & double-wides. There are only a couple of apartment blocks in the town, just off the main street that runs through the centre of the town
Amenities
The Steer - The oldest bar in Chase, caters almost exclusively to the ranchers & older locals, located toward the back of the town, away from the highway
The Burning Lizard - A dive bar/club with a biker vibe due to being close to the truck stop & highway. Has live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Ripley’s - An alien-themed bar and grill that pulls in the tourists, situated between the gas station and the trailer park, on the strip right next to the highway
Allie’s Truckstop - An all-night diner on the strip, attached to the gas station and local garage. Has a childrens play area out back with a spaceship-shaped jungle gym
Chase Gas and Gulp - Gas station that doubles up as a tourist information place & gift shop
Chase Autorepair - Garage attached to the gas station and truckstop
Chase Sundown Motel - On the strip by the truckstop, a little on the cheap side but not a total roach trap
Red Sands Trailer Park - A locals-only trailer park at the end of the main strip - where Brodie lives
Chace Grocery & Supply - not anything close to a Walmart but carries a decent range of food & other items - includes a meat counter, a bakery, a dairy counter & homewares department - meat and dairy are locally produced
Dave’s Hardware - Just a regular hardware store
Joy’s Curl Up and Dye - Hair salon
Chase post office - The original trading post building and one of two of the oldest structures in town
Chase Meridian Bank
Groome Road drive-in movie theatre/picnic area/rest stop
Sheriff’s Office and Chase townhall
Chase Clinic - There is no hospital in the area though. Any major medical emergencies have to be taken to Caliente - 1hr drive away
A veterinarians office - deals mostly in livestock and wildlife, but has a clinic for pets
St Matthews Church - A small, wooden chapel that is the second of the two oldest structures in the town.
An Army recruitment office
Chase public library - Small and a little outdated, but has free wifi
Chase Rec Centre - Recreation centre with sports facilities and an indoor swimming pool
Jed’s - A gun and ammunition store next to the Sheriff’s office
Emmett Brown Elementary School - named after the town founders wife
Chase High School
Midnight Moon Books & Brew
Midnight Moon is an occult bookstore and coffee shop owned and managed by Lachlan’s son, Dylan, as a front for the family’s genuine business that caters exclusively to non-humans, as the store itself just looks like any other mortal new-age/oddities-themed store.
Dylan lives in the apartment above, though the apartment is not technically part of the human world, nor is it fully in the fae realm. It sits in the space between, and Dylan keeps an active portal to the fae Otherworld on the premises so that he, his family and any others known to them can use it to come and go between worlds as they please.
The shop also exists as a sort of portal in a similar way to Howl’s moving castle in that it can be accessed from multiple locations. Of course, this is not noticed in any way by human customers, but non-humans will usually recognise it for what it is because the place has so many spells and charms on it to keep it off the radar of hunters.
The Treehouse
The Treehouse has been a labour of love for Lachlan over the last few centuries, having started out as just three rooms and expanding with every stray fae that turned up or was brought to the house by one of the others.
Now it has more than twenty bedrooms alone, along with several communal lounges, three kitchen areas and a host of other living spaces (including a bar, but only the older residents are allowed in there because Lachlan’s homebrew is notoriously powerful stuff).
Other than Raine and Alannah, Lachlan refers to everyone else as the kids, regardless of the fact most of them are in their 20s now, and each one of them has their own self-contained space that includes a bathroom. and a bedroom designed specifically to its occupants taste and magical affinity. This has resulted in some rather eclectic architecture and decorative choices (and occasional questionable ones at that), but the Treehouse is mostly hand-carved and constructed entirely by Lachlan himself.
Mag Ildathach: The Multicoloured Place
While some people mistakenly use Ildathach as an interchangeable term for the entirety of the Otherworld/Fae Realm, it is actually only a region of it, named for the wildly varied and colourful appearance of its native plant life, especially at night as many of the plants are naturally bioluminescent.
It is also more or less self-governed, and because of this, Illdathach tends to attract solitary types of fairy/wyldfae, rather than those of the various courts and troops (though it is not uncommon for Unseelie to make frequent appearances there for those same reasons).
Welcome to Alder Bay, Washington
Alder Bay, Washington is like many other western coastal cities that sprung up around the late 1800’s. To this day, signs of the city’s early heritage are fiercely protected. Despite being a city of over 150,000 people, there remains an aura of the old bones of the area. Many of the original buildings remain in the downtown area, and the historical society has made it their sole mission to remember the heritage of the area.
Within the city, many things evolved much like it has anywhere else. Technology advanced throughout the centuries, though magic has influenced things quite heavily. The natural branch of magic has helped to boost the transportation in Alder Bay, making travel extremely efficient and comfortable, thanks to the wards and seals put in place by witches over the years.
Throughout the city there are many forms of public transit available, with the most prolific being their magnetic light rails. With the gift of space-time seals, this means travel throughout the city limits is done mostly through magical means and has rendered automobiles obsolete and mostly unnecessary. There are still a few mundanes that keep with their old habits, choosing to have their own car or take the light rail.
