OLD ART TUESDAY
View down Loch Gilp, 04/01/2024
I used to live in Lochgilphead, on the west coast of Scotland. This is the view from the town green (I lived about 100yd further down this road), and what got me through lockdown - the view down the Atlantic inlet, down towards the Isle of Arran. Eventually, I sat down and painted it.
(yes, this is the painting in my blog header)
SAVE THE DATE! We have so much fun at this festival we are so pleased its back after a short break with covid. Its all outdoors with tents and gazebo’s around. Theres lots to see from dancers to music, craft stalls, demonstrations to activity stalls like ours where you can paint your own coasters / hangers and much more being planned for the day. If you are planning a trip then consider this weekend where you can learn so much about Scotlands Celtic & Pictish origins ( Scottish cultural and historical heritage) all in one spot just for the day ! 😊. #lochgilphead #whatsonargyll #scotland #oban #argyll #workshops #glassforsale #highlandglass (at Highland Glass & Ceramics) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfg0vQ9tY3Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Against all odds it was another beautiful day yesterday, so time for another long walk....albeit one pretty much devoid of gradient It was 14km between Ardrishaig on Loch Gilp, and Crinan on the Sound of Jura....by way of the Crinan Canal.
The canal opened in 1809, effectively enabling sea-going vessels to completely avoid a long and hazardous 85 mile trip around the Mull of Kintyre. It had mixed fortunes thereafter and these days it's more a nice shortcut for pleasure craft. It does however still need constant topping-up with fresh water, which is done via seven reservoirs up in the wooded hills of nearby Knapdale.
Marketing bods would have you believe it's 'Britain's most beautiful shortcut'.....and there's no denying it's a scenic gem AND a shortcut. And as with most other canals, there's a towpath the whole way, so you can walk or cycle very easily from one end to the other. Personally, we opted to finish in Crinan as it arguably means the scenery gets better as you go along....not least the expansive views across the Moine Mhor to distant Dunadd and Kilmartin, and the rising bulk of the Inner Hebrides as you approach Crinan itself.
Oh, and I have to say, I was very impressed with the whole walking experience on the Crinan Canal. Yep there's some stuff in winter maintenance, but the paths are wide & clear, the verges and grass around any benches had been strimmed, locks were being given a fresh coat of paint, and everything generally looked impeccable. Thumbs up to Scottish Canals
Our Oban shop/ gallery will be closed while we attend Lochgilphead Celtic & Pictish Festival tomorrow 3rd August 11-4. We will be holding mini workshops and selling goods there. #tradesupplier #glassforsale #stainedglass #ceramics #lochgilphead #argyll #argyllandbute #oban #lochgilpheadcelticandpictishfestival #highlandglass #vikings (at Highland Glass & Ceramics) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0pi2Q4Fgv2/?igshid=gbv30w7bltkt
What we did on our holidays...part 2.
What we did on our holidays…part 2.
Carnassarie Castle.
Carnassarie Castle is only about three or four miles from where we were staying and is just outside Kilmartin. So, wishing to explore it, I offered to take the kids there. Being about ten in the morning and wishing to stay in their jammies a while longer (lazy sods), they declined, so I went myself with the dogs.
At first, we had the castle to ourselves, but as I was…
