Tales from the Locust War

In the early days of the war, the peoples of Creation grew terrified of autochthonian spies in their midst. The locusts had set themselves to the task of disguise and infiltration with all of their famed genius. Their agents had mastered all the languages of the sunlit lands, copied the appearance of the local populations, and learned to fake some reasonable cultural awareness. Subtle retinal implants let them walk in the daylight without flinching while reporting all that they saw back to their central command. The autochthonia spy network seemed unstoppable, until one clever Exalt discovered a secret weakness.

Spy hunters would approach suspects and casually ask them if they knew the purpose of trees. Residents of Creation were understandably confused by this question, but agents of the machine realm would invariable try to provide an answer.

"Autonomous nutrition reclamation systems, of course."

"They are complex atmosphere-control devices, as we all know."

"I believe they offer some kind of structural support."

The using this and similar tactics, the agents of Creation were able to hunt down locust spies with remarkable efficiency. The autochthonians, caught completely by surprise by this approach, set about trying to discover the correct answer to the question. If their agents were again to move invisibly amongst the primitives, they must know the secret purpose of the trees..."
