The MEGA SHRUB record is being mixed right now. My excitement is off the charts, over 9000, in the red. until then here's the old shrub.
Throwback Thursday: MEGA SHRUB - Shrubstep. Back when I went to music school and free recording studio time was just floating around in the wind... This studio was nuts, and it's right across the street from Fenway Park.
HERE IT IS. The single & possible title track from the upcoming MEGA SHRUB EP. The mathiest math rock I've ever done, featuring Logan Edmison and Drew ofthe Drew.
I've been trying to release this EP forever. I didn't even ask if I could upload this, I JUST DONT CARE. ENJOY.
MEGA SHRUB's last show for a while is coming up. It may be the last show ever, though I hope not.
What I do hope and expect is that it will be awesome. We are playing with our friends from CT, Babytown Frolics, as well as a Canadian math rock band named The Bulletproof Tiger who are really great. It's gonna be a MATH ROCK EXTRAVAGANZA, basically, so if you're anywhere near Boston I hope you will come out.
To get you ready, here is a new live SHRUB recording from a show at THE FUNKY JUNGLE back in April. That venue is kick-ass, by the way, it's part of a killer scene in Providence RI.
The show is Tuesday, AUGUST 14th at O'Briens in Boston. $7. 21+. We're on first at 9PM. See you there!
MEGA SHRUB is currently working on a 20+ minute MATH ROCK MEGA OPUS track. It's very exciting for me because I've never been in a band that wrote long songs, mostly everything I do ends up in the 3-5 minute range, so the idea of doing a really long song is a new challenge and very exciting. Plus, there's definitely a tradition of long-form progressive music in Boston lately with Ben Levin Group being the most obvious example.
Here's a one-minute sample of what we have done so far. The song is about half written - 13 minutes of material so far - and this slice comes from a recent rehearsal.
Another big inspiration for this is Tera Melos's Drugs To The Dear Youth (first six tracks of that link), which is a six-song EP but pretty much works as a 22 minute math rock piece. It's one of the most essential math rock releases there is and if you haven't heard it yet, I urge you to check it out. It's one of my favorite pieces of music ever.
MEGA SHRUB hits the studio to record our first EP later this month.
