Last night I watched the first four episodes of @ikwydls and there’s a lot I love! First, they restored an element from the book(Also featured in Scream: Resurrection) which was something I was looking for! Second, there’s a pretty solid unraveling mystery that does dip into elements of other #LoisDuncan stories and there’s some gore, nudity and violence that surpasses the movies which was surprising! The one major critique I give this show is that the characters are incredibly unlikeable. And I don’t mean that in a “These are today’s youth of America and I can’t relate” or that their acting is bad because that’s fine. I mean that these kids are really villainous. In the book, movies and other pieces of Duncan’s work(like Killing Mr. Griffin), the characters are basically good, relatable kids driven to do bad things. In this, the kids treat each other so badly that it’s hard to sympathize with them when they’re getting stalked. I will say though that during the course of four episodes, each of them shows moments of genuine humanity! Will it be enough to really care when the body count starts rising? Every summer since 1998, I’ve read #LoisDuncan’s seminal classic, “#IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer”! For my annual reread this year, I’ve decided to switch things up a tad: I’m listening to the #audiobook! The only drawback is that it’s read from the updated, 2010, version and not the 1973 original. I’m so intimately familiar with the original text that it’s jarring and cringey to hear things about cell phones, GPS, emails and Wendy’s with phrasing that is very 70’s but it’s also kind of fun to point out the differences!
