it started out as just shocks received on other parties that were shrugged off as you carrying too much static electricity.
sams hand instinctively quips back as you handed him a snack and seated yourself on the couch next to him.
“jesus, y/n. you shocked me.” he laughs, opening the bag of chips.
“oops.” you shrugged with a playful smile on your face, thinking nothing of it.
the next time, it made you laugh.
your hand was placed on nats shoulder in comfort when she was telling you about her last mission before hugging her.
she embraced you with a laugh.
“what have you been touching that gives you so much static?”
“sorry.” you laughed, “shocked sam the other day, too.”
the next time though, it furrowed your eyebrows.
it was later in the day when you shocked tony while handing him a wrench.
your hand stills as he stares at your with a raised eyebrow.
“thought metal was a conductor for electricity… not people.” he laughs, but your gut turns in confusion. “that felt like more than just a shock. you’re lucky i could handle it.”
for the rest if the day, the interactions stayed on your mind.
tony was right, it didn’t feel like just a shock. you felt electricity run up your forearm. it made the hair on your neck stand up.
it felt weird… but it didn’t hurt you at all. it was just an unfamiliar situation and made you feel ill about the potential of accidentally hurting someone.
then there was the time you sent clint to the medical ward.
all he did was put his hand on your upper arm as he moved past you and it burned his hand. it even burned through your shirt.
it’s like time stilled. everyone stopped moving as it happened, the only sound was clint’s yelp.
all eyes were on you, but you felt frozen as you stared at the counter in front of you.
“what the hell was that?” tony’s voice cut the air and it shook you from your frozen state.
your eyes darted around, your face panicked and it landed on clints hand.
“i don’t know-“ you were cut off by bruce rushing to look at clints hand. “im sorry i didn’t mean too- i don’t know what that was.” you panicked, trying to get to clint.
“no-!” bruce cuts you off, backing them both away from you with a hand out. “don’t touch anyone.”
your hand stills, a lump in your throat forming. suddenly air couldn’t find your lungs.
they rushed off as you muttered a sorry, leaving you in the room with the others.
no one said anything, like everyone was just as frozen and confused as you were. you felt their eyes on you.
it felt like too much, like they were afraid or angry.
your eyes fell to your hands in front of you. you didn’t blame them, you were quite afraid of yourself right now.
thor steps forward, walking slowly over as to not alarm you.
“don’t.” you muttered, not harshly, but afraid.
“it is okay. everything is alright.” he keeps moving, one foot after the other.
“thor.” tony warns. “she’s overwhelmed right now.”
“i’m aware.” he answers back, like that was already obvious.
his hands reach out for you, but you step back quickly.
“don’t touch me.” you shake your head. “no one touch me.” you back up further warning them with wide eyes.
“y/n.” thor calls, but you were already gone, rushing down the hallway away from everyone. he sighs, his head bowing before turning to look at everyone.
“seriously? why was i the only one to try and console her?” he questions, shaking his head.
“we don’t know what’s wrong with her. there was too much at stake.”
“wrong with her? there’s nothing wrong with her.” he starts, his voice fueled with passion.
“you know that’s not what i mean’t!” tony quips back. “you see what she just did to clint. we don’t know what else could happen.”
nat stays quiet, her head lowered in concern.
“we should have said something.” bucky says, his jaw tightened.
then the room falls quiet, regret filling the silence. he knows what it’s like to be treated that way.
“we need to figure out what that was.” tony speaks, his voice gentler now.
“whatever. i need to follow after her.” thor moves quickly on his feet, he could hear tonys footsteps rush in the other direction, surely on his way to go make sense of this.
you were unsure about the whole situation, about yourself, your own body, and thor knows that. he knows how it feels to discover something so crazy about yourself, but it was expected from him from the moment he was born. no one ever expected nor did you expect that to happen.
his feet are heavy against the thin carpeting of the lengthy hallways, he knew exactly where you were going. even if he didn’t, he could feel your trail of energy you left behind.
you door was shut at the end of the hallway, the decor and funny pictures of the team still clung to it like nothing ever went wrong.
he could only stand in front of it for a few long moments, regaining his composure outside of the barrier between you.
his breathing steadied from the rugged breaths he was dragging into his lungs.
something loud hitting the ground shook him, the sound was muffled from the walls.
his knocks quick and harsh before barging in, worried of what could of possibly happened.
someone could’ve been in there with you, you could’ve fallen and hurt yourself, it couldn’t be good.
instead what he saw was the belongings of your desk littered on the floor, and you sitting on the ground with your knees tightly to your chest with your back to your bed.
he couldn’t see your face, just your head dug into your arms that rested on the top of your knees.
he took a deep breath in after accessing the situation, knowing what you needed right now was a calming presence.
he pushes your door shut and walks over slowly, stepping over the items on the floor. he made sure to scan over the floor as he moved to check for anything broken that could possibly hurt you.
he sits, his back resting against your bed. he’s close enough for you to feel his body heat radiating onto you, but he doesn’t invade your space.
he could hear the sound of your rugged breathing and his eyes scan over you.
he says your name once, smooth and grounding.
you hum in response, feeling too embarrassed and guilty to look at him.
“it is not your fault.” he mutters, frowning.
you look at him finally, not an abrupt movement.
your face was panicked and your grip was harsh against your arms.
you both share silence together, just searching each others eyes and feeling an understanding.
out of all the people who could understand what you felt, not just emotionally, but the way your body feels when developing and discovering a power in you, especially one so specific like that form of electricity, it was him.
he opens his arms, offering physical comfort. it wasn’t just physical comfort though, it was offer to show you that you wont hurt him.
you hesitate, but you scoot over to him in seconds.
his arms wrap around you tightly, and the feeling was different. it wasn’t a weird sensation of shock running through your body, it felt like connection. like your body flowed into his.
it was a breath of fresh air, something neither of you have felt. and you weren’t sure you ever wanted to move from his hold.
you both stayed awhile like that. there was a silent agreement that you both needed a cooldown, especially you.
during the shared moments, a storm started outside. it further calmed you and served as a sound that soothed your nerves.
it held a different meaning now, and it seemed symbolic to you that a storm started outside when you were together.
“we will figure this out together.” he finally speaks, and it made you smile the way his voice sounded so warm with your ear against his chest.
you sit up, just enough to be face to face with him. your legs were still thrown over his lap.
“i’m scared, thor.” you finally speak. “i don’t understand what’s going on.”
he nods in understanding.
“you were there in my times of fear, and the teams, you pushed through it with us. i promise that it will be okay.”
you frown at his words, feeling the weight of sincerity in them. thor is a man of his word.
“i hurt clint. i saw the way they looked at me. they’ve never looked at me like that.”
he shakes his head and brings his hands up to hold your face between them, a newfound expression of determination played on his features.
“they weren’t scared of you, my lady. they were scared for you. it was other worldly what happened.” one of his hands falls to the hole in your shirt, the rim of where clints hand was burnt. “they did not know what to do.”
you sighed, feeling defeated on what to do. it felt like your body wasn’t yours anymore.
“i promise.” he mutters, his hands returning to your face, keeping your eyes on his. “i will carry the weight of your world on my shoulders.”
you laughed, it was more of a breath forced out, but the smile returned to your face at his words.
“you think you’re strong enough for that?” you quizzed, finally feeling lighthearted.
he smiles brightly with you, his head tilting playfully.
“i’m not sure if the god can handle it.” he jokes, then brings your head down to press a lingering kiss to your forehead.
“i deem you worthy.” you joke back, the skin where his lips once were left it feeling electric.
“then it shall be!” he boasts, his voice still gentle. “how about we go find that man of iron? he seems to always have a plan.”
you hum in response, then nod.
“his plan usually is just to face it head on and figure it out from there.” you shrug, “but it always works.”
you take your legs from off of his lap and he stands swiftly, contradictory to his size.
“baby steps.” he offers a hand.
“baby steps.” you take it, letting his large hand find yours and pull you up with little effort. “oh- i should clean this up first…”
he shakes his head and his hand finds yours lower back and hand to help you step over the items scattered over the floor.
“we will get that later. in fact- you don’t even worry of it. your mind should be on the important things. i will handle it.” he smiles and leads you out of your bedroom. your door clicks shut behind you.
“thank you, thor. you’re literally sent from the gods.” you smile, embarrassed.
“it’s my pleasure.” he responds quickly.
his hand remains on your lower back the entire way to find tony, serving as both a guide and anchor.
the lab doors his open as you both walked in. tony wasn’t in his office, or shop, so you both figured he’d be with clint and bruce in the medbay portion of the lab.
your eyes are immediately set on the three in the medbay room, the large glass walls not hising their hurried conversation.
clints back is facing you as he sat on the medical bed, clearly watching bruce and tony’s conversation.
your stomach churned watching them, knowing exactly what they were talking about.
thor notices your hesitation right as tony noticed you both walking in, the three turning to you in concern.
“it is alright. i’m here.” he whispers, continuing to lead you over.
after walking up the couple of stairs across the floor, you walked in.
their eyes were on you, a mix of emotion playing on their faces.
your jaw clenches in discomfort and you wrap your arms around your stomach.
“i’m really sorry clint-“ you start, but he quickly cuts you off.
“don’t.” he shakes his head, standing and walking over to you. and as reckless as it was, he hugs you.
it was brief, but it held meaning.
“don’t apologize for that. it wasn’t your fault. plus, i’m okay.” he smiles, raising his hand.
you could see thor smile in your peripheral, feeling his hand squeeze your shoulder.
“yep! minor burn. he will be healed up in a week. barely injured the first layer of skin.” bruce offers an awkward smile. “sorry for- treating you like a…monster earlier.”
“don’t apologize.” you shake your head.
“yeah! let’s just all stop the apologies and get down to business here people.” tony interjects. “but i guessi’llsaysorrytoorealquick.”
he says it very quickly, but you nod in amusement.
“i found something.” he adds, his voice turning serious. “follow.”
he breezes past, making his way down to the main area of the lab.
you shoot thor a glance, then look at bruce and clint for an answer.
bruce immediately darts his eyes away from you, and clint offers a tight lipped smile in support, nodding in tony’s direction.
“oookay.” you sigh, then walk past thor as you walk through the doorway. “this seems serious.”
you find tony, walking up behind him, he threw up a hologram of a bunch of files, but mostly clips.
“what is this?” you question, glancing over your mission report from three months ago. next to it was a file of the man you brought in along with a few of the soldiers he had, and a couple of pictures.
he enlarges a video clip and plays it, stepping back beside you.
“watch closely.”
the clip plays, it was low quality but it clearly showed you when the targets experiment exploded with you in the room.
it briefly shows you cuffing one of the men, then your head snaps towards a sudden sound. whatever the target was working on crackles and starts to glow a bright blue, then the camera cuts after it explodes. the video ends with it paused on the screen fully blue.
you sigh, shaking your head.
“why are you having her watch that again, stark?” thor questions, walking up behind you both. thors hand caresses your arm for comfort, then looks at everything in front of him.
“that explosion killed one of those men.” he starts, turning to you. “you got out of it with a few cuts and bruises from the knock back.”
your eyebrows knit together, but then it hits you like a truck. it didn’t make any sense. the man that died was burnt to a crisp when he was found. you breathing shallows and your mouth parts.
“that’s- no.” you shake your head in disbelief, suddenly feeling nauseous.
thor turns to you, his hands on the sides of your arms.
“what does this mean?” thor questions, his head turning to tony.
“i think whatever that scientist was making that was so damn important to risk his life over wasn’t just some silly experiment. i think that it was mean’t to explode.” he starts, trying to say it in the gentlest way possible. “i think that he was trying to harness the power that was in it, and transfer it to a human. and he used his hail mary when we breached him. and you just so happened to be there.”
“you’re saying i absorbed that shit?” you exclaim, bracing yourself backwards against one of the tables.
“somehow.” he sighs, his expression saddened. “what i don’t know is why you absorbed it, and the other guy suffered at the hand of it.”
you breathe, your eyes on the floor.
“listen.” tony starts, standing in front of you. “you survived. though it’s shitty you got whatever that was, it could have been you that died that day.”
you were still in utter disbelief, but he was right. it sent shivers down your spine to think about it.
“and i’m glad you didn’t.” tony mutters, patting your shoulder. “we should’ve been more skeptical when it happened. we were all just too focused on the fact that you were okay, that we didn’t notice.”
“this is fucking crazy.” your groan, tilting your head back and pinching the bridge of your nose.
“tell me about it. seems like we attract it in this business.” tony sighs, stepping back and walking over to the files played out on the holograms.
thor slides his hand up and down your arm.
“this is good. we’re figuring it out.” he reassures you.
“i figured it out.” tony chimes in playfully.
you roll your eyes, but tony’s sass and thors reassurance brings you back down.
“what’s next?” you ask, knowing you weren’t even close to over with this.
“well… bruce and i are gonna run a couple tests on you, draw some blood, the whole gimmick. that’ll get us closer to figuring out exactly what’s in you.”
“okay.” you breathe. “that’s a start.”
“baby steps.” thor smiles. “i’ll stay with you.”
“yep!” tony raises a finger, turning back towards you both and walking back up to the medbay. “baby steps! for all we know you can do much more than just electrocute people.”
you sigh, rolling your eyes as you watch tony walk away, then turn back towards thor.
“that really puts my mind at ease.” you mumble to him.
he offers a sheepish smile, mentally noting to scold tony for his poor choice of words later.
