She was not in the outer court when he arrived, but his presence, like a static shock leveled through her hall, was enough to garner her attention. Rising from her chair, she set down the stave she'd been spinning wool upon, and slowly moved to the room between her bedchambers and the meadhall. Here, only guests she deemed worthy of her undivided attention would be met, and Ganglot and Gangloti turned from their chores to look up at her.
She ignored them, peering into the nigh vault of blackness her hall was when she left it, a void's rim, cycling into oblivion. There, the faint green glow of dead coals outlined a figure alive, form obscured by whispering mists.
Her imagination gave her sight where her last good eye had little, but she could almost have given oath that his hair moved as flame, even lighting up the contours of his face. Perhaps even the glint of a metal circlet about his wrist... but as much as this was sight, this was memory. This was a young girl looking from the mask of a woman at a man she once recalled as lifting her to the sky.
But she was not this girl any longer.
She'd grown hard and cold and without the fire of life.
She strode forward and the hall rippled, as if coming back into being at her footsteps. Carved serpents almost seemed to rear up as the baelfires danced upwards in a cold haze, shadows racing along the arched roof.
The woman stopped before her throne, and looked down upon the man.
"Beware your footing, lest you fall at my doorstep in the darkness, father."
