The Japanese Peace Pagoda in London's Battersea Park is one of 80 such pagodas worldwide. Each features a different design, but the premise is the same - to promote peace between nations, and the abandonment of nuclear arms. . The concept was developed by a Japanese Buddhist monk after the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Monks, nuns and followers of his peaceful temple build the pagodas and gift them to nations, and then one member of the temple stays with it to look after the Pagoda to maintain and promote its principles. .
