Let's get hammered!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Summary: Shangque finds a woman sneaking through the palace and decides to take her to the prison. The woman though (Jieli) uses improper practices (namely her mouth) to convince Shangque not to hurt her.
Sunset
Jieli was sitting on the ledge of the platform, her feet dangling over the edge. Again.
Shangque stopped as soon as he saw her, then changed his course towards her. “Jieli.”
“Hello black dragon.” She greeted him but she didn’t look at him. She seemed lost in her thoughts, just staring ahead.
“Are you all right?”
She hummed, which could mean ‘yes’. Shangque was unsure what to do now. He didn’t want her to sit there, it always made his heart skip a beat because she could fall and die. But she hadn’t listened to him before, she wouldn’t do so now. For some reason she liked this place.
It was unusual for Jieli to be so quiet and still, it made the dragon double uneasy. After a few minutes, during which he just stood there, staring at Jieli, while she ignored him, she finally turned her head and focused on him.
Then she rolled her eyes. “Come here stupid dragon.” She patted the floor by her side. “Sit down and watch the sunset with me. It is rather pretty today.”
Well, that explained what exactly she was doing. At least a little.
Shangque couldn’t remember when he had last watched a sunset. He didn’t have time for that. Well, he certainly didn’t have time now, he was on his way to the Moon Supreme, but finding Jieli here changed everything.
Especially when she invited him so sit next to her.
So he approached her and took the offered place. Then he watched the sunset. The sky was filled with colours, they were so intense, Shangque had to agree, it was pretty.
Suddenly, he felt Jieli scooting closer, and then she leaned her head against his shoulder.
The dragon froze.
And since Jieli didn’t do anything else, since she didn’t say anything, he sat there, slightly nervous, unsure, but at the same time unbelievably giddy and happy. He didn’t dare move a single inch, afraid she’d scoot away, so he stayed. Until the sun had set, until darkness slowly settled around them and Jieli sat up with a soft sigh.
Though Shangque had barely felt her through his armour, he swore he could now feel her absence. He wanted to pull her close, back to his side, but was afraid he’d frighten her off.
“The sunsets in Cangyan Sea are amazing. I rarely got to see the sun at home.”
No wonder she was up here so often. It was such a small information about her former life, yet Jieli rarely talked about herself, at least not seriously, and Shangque put it into the mental box labelled ‘the way to understand Jieli (and maybe win her over)’.
When she looked at him, the seriousness was all gone. “Stupid black dragon, why do you keep sitting here? Don’t you have work to do? A Moon Supreme to protect?” She slapped him on the shoulder. “Go, or someone will blame me for your being late.”
Shangque hated to leave her, but she was right, he had work to do.
