90′s theme Tubular Reabsorption and Secretion
Loop of Henle
responsible for
Water reabsorption from collecting duct
Concentrating urine (concentration depends on length)
Lowering water potential
*Interesting fact - The Loop of Henle is longer in animals from arid (dry) regions and short in mammals from wet regions. This is because animals in wet regions need to maximise the amount of water that is reabsorbed because there is less available.
Two regions
Descending limb
Narrow
Thin Walls
Very permeable to water
Ascending Limb
Wide
Thick walls
Impermeable to water
The counter current multiplier ***
This effect happens when two liquids flow in opposite directions past eachother. When this happens substrate exchange is greater than if they flowed in the same direction because there is a greater difference in water potential (greater osmotic gradient)
Lab 13 - Kidney, pt 2
Is it bad that
instead of saying
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen
I say
In the name of Raja, Carmen Carrera, and Jujubee. Amen.
