This is a serious question. Well, specifically: Mum, why can’t we get a limousine? My darling girl cherub posed this exact conundrum to me today. We were on our way to swimming lessons when she made the announcement. By her reckoning, if ‘fancy Americans’ can drive around in them then why can’t she get one to go to school in? The entire plan was worked out in her young mind. I would get up at the crack of dawn and chauffeur her around to all of her friend's homes. I would pick each one of them up and give them a lift to school and then home again in the evening. Easy-peasy don’t you think? While I am delighted that she is finally taking on board some things that I have been saying about the Year of Less But Better. I do feel that she hasn’t fully grasped the concept to its optimal just yet. I tried to explain to her that even if we were not embracing minimalism this year or having a year of No Spend, under no circumstances would I ever entertain the purchasing of said vehicle ever let alone to specifically to chauffeur her and her entourage to school. After a baffled pause she inquired as to why she genuinely could see nothing wrong with the plan albeit there is a sharp bend just before the school and outside that the plan was flawless. She was only surprised that no one had thought of it sooner. I made the fatal mistake of telling the kids what I put in there lunch boxes this morning. It all started off so simply. We were going out the door to school. Everyone delighted with themselves to see their friends again after the holiday season. I handed them their lunch boxes to store away in their little school bags. As I handed over the goods, I was asked by the oldest cherub, what was in her lunch box. Me being delighted with my health choices (at great prices) proceeded to tell them all about the lovely brown bread and cheese sandwiches, the carrot slices, blueberries and small wedge of pomegranate stored within. Oh and bottle of fresh cool water in case they get thirsty during the day. I waited for them to hug me in delight at the choice meal I’d made for them. Instead I got stunned silence. Then came the inquiry about where exactly were the ‘lunchables’ and cheese dippers and crisps?’ To which I explained (again) about The Year of Less But Better. This year where we are not going to waste our money on expensive lunch box fillers in lieu of health fresh food that is on promotion in the local store that week. Needless to say, this did not go down well at all. There were various declarations that I had ruined their lives and that everyone else would have ‘proper’ food and why were they the ones to bear the brunt of my decisions. The whole journey into school was awash with food suggestions that could be bought for lunches. Unfortunately, there was not a lot of consensus between my suggestions and theirs. Lunches are so a loosers game.
