50+ hours into Prey. Not including the few missions I replayed… that would be another three to five hours worth I guess?

You've completed the game and are at the final boss. You are confident in your ability to beat him, and indeed, you do very well. When his hp is almost gone, a dialogue opens, and you relax, knowing you will only have one more thing to do to win the game. 

And then the boss kills you and you learned the fight was impossible without an item you would have gained from a random loot at the beginning of the game.
