so I’ve been rereading lotr ......

 So I’ve been told to talk about Achilles Come Down by gang of youths (listen here) and how Achilles and Patroclus mirror/parallel Peter Parker and Harley Keener. I’m bored. I did my math homework earlier. Let’s do this.

After a bit of talking with peachy (@peachy-keener, go give them validation or I’ll lose my mind) we’ve come to the conclusion that Achilles, generally seen as the main character, is mirrored directly by Peter Parker in many, many, many ways. 

Let’s start out with the first: Achilles has the literal strength of a god, with only one weakness (his Achilles tendon, named specifically for this myth). One could argue that Patroclus is his second weakness. 

Peter Parker is enhanced beyond measure, with an insane amount of strength, reflexes, and enhanced senses. He’s a juggernaut, put simply, and guess what? One weakness. 

Harley Keener, who mirrors Patroclus.

Patroclus is, mythologically, Achilles’ closest friend, confidant, and generally considered to be the man he’s in love with. He anchors Achilles to reality, keeps him grounded. He is the reason Achilles fights, and he gives his life meaning.

Harley Keener, despite having had a rough life of his own, stands by Peter while he falls apart and gives him a reason to keep going. There’s a line in the song- Achilles, Achilles, put down the bottle- that I think definitely relates more to Harley than it does Peter, because the trauma of his father being absent and walking out is enough to give Harley trust issues beyond trust issues. The significance of this? Peter is telling him to stop hurting himself.

Another line that lends importance to this concept is contributed to us by @lordgreyjoy: there may not be meaning, so find one and seize it. Harley is Peter’s meaning, and Peter is Harley’s. Achilles is Patroclus’ meaning, and Patroclus is Achilles’.

One other verse to consider: the pre-chorus, which. Well. It gave me too many emotions to fathom. The song centers around Achilles/Peter being on some sort of ledge- whether it is an emotional ledge or a physical ledge is unknown- with Patroclus/Harley trying to get him to come down. Trying to get him to stay.

The pre-chorus is a duet, sung by Patroclus/Harley and another voice- for Peter, we’re going to look at this voice as the trauma that he’s endured over the years of his life.

The voice continues to encourage Peter to jump, and with every encouragement, Harley offers a rebuttal. However, as the song goes on a bit longer, Achilles’ name is no longer said- we don’t know who the voice is talking to, but the rebuttals continue to be offered. Peter and Harley keep each others’ respective voices at bay and talk each other down, tethering their other half to reality and, as an extension, life.

The song ends with this stanza:

How the most dangerous thing is to love How you will heal and you'll rise above Crowned by an overture bold and beyond Ah, it's more courageous to overcome

In conclusion: The Harley Keener and Peter Parker Achilles Parallel is, at its core, built around one column: humanity. 

Achilles chooses Patroclus over his godlike powers. Patroclus keeps Achilles human.

It is Peter’s love for Harley and his family that keeps him human and, by extension, Harley’s love for Peter that keeps them going.
